Rent rise on the cards for pensioner housing units in mid Canterbury

Pensioners could face rent hikes of almost $100 per week under an Ashburton District Council proposal. By Jonathan Leask of Local Democracy Reporting The council currently charges 55% of the market rate for some of its 102 elderly persons housing units, but is looking at increasing it to an 80% minimum. This would mean rent increases from $4 to $96, depending on whether the residents could access Government accommodation support.

Merger talks: Christchurch mayor told to 'put big pants on'

An Ashburton councillor says Christchurch City mayor Phil Mauger should "put his big pants on" and show his cards for amalgamation plans. Ashburton councillors reduced eight amalgamation options down to five - none of which include Christchurch City, at a district council meeting on Wednesday. During the meeting, councillor Tony Todd suggested Christchurch City Council needed to step up and lead. Mauger should "put his big pants on and say we want to go to a super city", Todd said.

Under the pump: Ashburton council reveals soaring fuel bill

The impact of an almost $500,000 fuel and electricity cost increase on the Ashburton District Council was made public on Wednesday. The district's upcoming rates rise had been signalled at 8.71 percent in March, but the war in Iran and an unexpected hike in electricity line charges have pushed that figure up to an average rise of 9.15 percent. The rise also includes a 13.05 percent increase in three waters costs, and 5.43 percent average for everything else.
