Godzilla vs. my attention span … FIGHT!
Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to watch TV on weekdays, even during the summer. Still, when my family had gone to sleep, I’d sneak into the kitchen and precariously climb onto a tall wooden stool so I could reach the height of our countertop Toshiba. I’d push the power on button with as much precision as I could muster, but still — zzzz — the quiet crackle of the TV warming up was enough to make me look over each shoulder twice.

Letter from the editor
As I begin to mourn everything I’m about to leave behind at USC, I know by far the greatest loss will be saying goodbye to the people at the Daily Trojan. By SASHA RYU (Bryce Dechert / Daily Trojan) There’s something I find deeply unpalatable about going from 21 to 22. Twenty-one is such a coveted milestone — especially in the United States. Twenty-two, on the other hand, doesn’t hold much significance to people beyond being a so-called “angel number” and the title of a popular Taylor Swift song.

‘They took away everything’: USC cancels main commencement
The University will not hold a “main stage” commencement ceremony this May, USC Academic Events announced in a communitywide statement Thursday afternoon, citing insufficient time to carry out “new safety measures.” Individual ceremonies for USC’s 23 schools and colleges, along with smaller celebrations, will continue as scheduled.
USC cancels main stage commencement
The main stage commencement ceremony is canceled, the University announced Thursday. The announcement also introduced a number of safety measures that will be implemented as attendees join the remaining satellite commencements and miscellaneous ceremonies, including requiring students and their guests to obtain tickets before being allowed on campus. “Graduating students will be able to reserve, free of charge, tickets for themselves and up to eight named guests,” the announcement read.

[ENG/ESP] ’Esa es mi bandera’: Latin pride prevails at Coachella 2024
Last year, Coachella welcomed its first Spanish-language headliner with proud puertorriqueño and international sensation Bad Bunny. On the heels of this year’s festivities, an unignorable Mexican presence permeated the festival grounds. Hanging flags fluttered with each dry breeze as fans in sombreros, trajes de charro and bedazzled banderas flooded the field in a sea of red, white and green.
Ring in summer with this year’s blockbusters
As the school year draws to a close and the first rays of summer sun appear over McCarthy Quad, eyes can’t help but drift toward movie theaters back home. While the academic calendar may be ending, the season of blockbusters hasn’t even started yet. Below are a few of the most anticipated films that will hit theaters this summer.
‘Soliloquy’ thrills as casting call commentary
Sitting in the middle of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity bathroom, at least 20 people huddled inside, holding microphones, lights and camera equipment. In the center sat Celeste Liu and her sister, Simone. Simone wouldn’t stop teasing Celeste, because Celeste forgot her line, even though she wrote the script. Starring in a self-written film is no out-of-the-ordinary event for a film student at USC. Students attempt to run their own productions on tiny budgets all the time.

Music lovers unite for Coachella Week 2, Day 2
It was an atrociously hot day in Coachella Valley on Saturday, where concertgoers filed onto the festival grounds en masse for the weekend’s second pilgrimage. But this wasn’t just any Saturday in April. Throughout the day, lighter clicks echoed across the field— marking with plumes of smoke the great day of marijuana, 4/20. Some artists were particularly equipped to celebrate the occasion, ringing in the holiday among its billowing clouds of celebratory smoke.

Pandemic graduates face yet another ‘redesigned’ commencement
The year 2020 was marked, for many, by pain and trauma. The coronavirus pandemic engulfed the world. Lockdowns and subsequent remote learning brought drastic changes, the effects of which still reverberate years later. When it came time to graduate, many high school seniors were forced to walk not the stage of an auditorium, but often their own living rooms as their names were called. Others had no graduation ceremony at all.
The Weekly Frame: Fisheye
My experience shooting this week’s Weekly Frame was different from my usual process. Instead of going out and allowing the random things I come across to inform my photos, the picture of the metro bus was semi-deliberate and inspired by the hallway fight scene in “Inception” (2010), believe it or not. For those wondering how I got the photo to look like this, it’s all about the lens. In fact, the lens I used is not exactly made for the type of camera I have.
Artists stun at Day 1 of Coachella’s second weekend
Look back at our live coverage. The crackle and snare of revving motorcycle engines split through 10 minutes of anticipatory silence, beckoning the arrival of Coachella 2024’s sanctified, unofficial mother: Lana Del Rey. She rolled in with her dancers en suite, heralding the beginning of the end of the festival’s second Friday. Lana had thousands under her spell that night; her bewitching melodies floated through the cool desert air; sound turned into lifelong memories for all those in attendance.

A running club set up to improve the health and well-being of a local community hoped to raise thousands for charity by running the London Marathon. Members of Luton Lions will be running on Sunday in support of the Children with Cancer charity. The group, set up in 2017, has raised some £411,000 for various charities. Aftershocks ring in wake of USC valedictorian speech decision
USC’s unprecedented decision Monday to cancel its Class of 2024 valedictorian’s speech is still reverberating two days after the fact. Asna Tabassum has made national headlines and appeared as a guest on CNN and CBS News. Statement after statement has criticized the decision in one way or another. A petition to reinstate Tabassum’s speech has garnered 38,000 signatures in 48 hours.
The Weekly Frame: Spring
Coming out of a very rainy winter, I wanted to capture the warmth, community, and greenery of campus as spring sets in. The best places to do that were the lawns around campus that people gathered to read, rest, and relax with friends. On Wednesday, McCarthy Quad was set up for the freshmen to celebrate their first year on campus.

With the user’s permission, those messages may then be posted for the account’s 11,300 followers to see and react to. On Feb.
Space excitement eclipses campus
Eclipse glasses swapped hands, from student to student, at Tommy Trojan on Monday morning as roughly 300 attendees excitedly prepared to witness the first total solar eclipse to cross the contiguous United States since 2017. While California didn’t experience the phenomenon of totality, the USC community came out to see the moon shrouding about half of the sun’s area to form a bright crescent in the sky, too dangerous to view with the naked eye.
