The High Holidays approach. Rosh Hahshanah (the New Year) starts Monday night through the Ten Days of Awe to Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). During this time, it is traditional to reflect on the past year as we seek to be inscribed in the Book of Life. The Talmud teaches that Yom Kippur atones for sins against God but not for sins against people – for that, forgiveness must be sought from those affected. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stated goals since Oct. 7, 2023, have been incoherent, but his catchphrases have evolved. It started with the nebulous “wiping out Hamas” and the undefined “total victory.” Only after prodding was “the return of the hostages” added.

President Trump abruptly left the G-7 meeting in Alberta, Canada last night. The stated reason was to deal with the Israel-Iran conflict, although it could also have just been to create drama. Israel has been remarkably successful in its initial forays in the war against Iran, hitting nuclear facilities and ballistic missile sites, and conducting targeted assassinations of key Iranian military and scientific personnel.
