The Republican Party Brand Is ‘Betrayal’
(Photo by DON EMMERT/AFP via Getty Images) Since World War II, no military ally has done more for the United States than Ukraine. If it wasn’t for Ukraine absorbing all those Russian cruise missiles, suicide drones, cyber attacks, and meat-grinder infantry charges, it would be a NATO nation, and the United States would be in this fight directly.
Up To 90% Of Elon Musk’s Fans May Have Been Russian Bots, And Ukraine Just Silenced Them
(Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue) The world’s richest man continues to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to help Republican politicians escape the electoral consequences of their spectacular mismanagement of all three branches of the federal government. We’ll see if he can succeed in buying another election.
Museum Closures Are Partly Due To Federal Hostility, But Also To Needless Corporatization Of Nonprofits
I consider myself a bit of a lay expert when it comes to museum closures. I worked at a museum for two years before it was suddenly shuttered. Both of those years being ones in which Donald Trump was either running for or serving as president, there were always vague rumors of funding shortfalls and possible site closures. Yet, nothing concrete was announced, no changes were asked of employees, until the museum closure was sprung upon us with just a few short weeks’ notice to clear out.
How Many Times Can Trump Pick Rural Republicans’ Pockets Before They Wise Up?
Last Sunday, I was at a bar off a lonely rural road half-watching my favorite NFL team when a Donald Trump campaign ad flashed onscreen. I’d previously heard of these taxpayer-funded propaganda spots airing on Fox News and Newsmax, but this was the first time I became aware that such garbage now permeated even real TV channels. There it was, at the end: “Paid for by the U.S. government.” I looked to my left. I looked to my right.

Remaining Reporters Should Self-Deport From The White House, Avoid Spreading More Trump Lies
Late last week, President Donald Trump abruptly banned CNN, MS NOW, and Politico reporters from the White House because he didn’t like their unfavorable (in other words, accurate) coverage. All three news outlets immediately sued on First Amendment grounds to get their access reinstated. They will probably win. Even rivals stood by the banned media outlets.

I’m Going To AI-Proof My Writing By Becoming Increasingly Unhinged In A Way No Machine Would Ever Replicate
Another day, another round of tech company CEOs proclaiming we have a greater than 10% chance of artificial intelligence causing the extinction of humanity. Though that dire of an outlook seems a little alarmist to me, it’s hard to argue against the immediate need for some kind of AI regulation. That is, unless you’re a bloviating madman.

Like Zeus, Billionaires Should Go Undercover As Derelicts To Reward Kindness And Punish Nastiness
Alright, everyone’s seen Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” by now, but in case you were scared away by the dumb complaints of wokeness or have been in a coma for the latter half of the summer, here’s a minor spoiler alert. The idea of Zeus’s law, that a host must welcome a visitor (regardless of social status) with food, drink, and shelter before even asking who they are or why they have come, is pretty central to the plot.

The Minnesota State Fair Is Making Trump’s Great American State Fair Look Like The Pathetic Failure That It Was
This summer, Donald Trump hijacked the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with a slate of events designed to celebrate himself. One of these, held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was what he called the Great American State Fair.

$6 A Gallon Gas, A Huge Recession, Or AI Taking Your Job: Pick 2
Unless something changes dramatically in the last few days of the month, this will be the most expensive August ever when it comes to gasoline. The national average for a gallon of regular is $4.10 (and probably even a bit more by the time you’re reading this). While the prospect of gas being around $4 per gallon isn’t exactly thrilling, it could get a lot worse very quickly.

Halfwit Republican Senate candidate running in Minnesota says 'it's embarrassing' to be Minnesotan
I'm proudly Minnesotan. Born and raised in Long Prairie, Minnesota, I'm a big fan of the state's hunting and fishing, neighborly culture, and leadership in progressive politics. However, the Republican candidate for Minnesota's open U.S. Senate seat doesn't think I should be proud of where I'm from. Here's her full quote that she had the courage to voice on Fox News so that I can't be accused of failing to include context: Minnesotans are exhausted, and John, quite frankly, they're embarrassed.

Lobbing Multimillion-Dollar Munitions At Targets Worth Less Than The Missiles Themselves Remains A Bad War Strategy
(image via Getty) The precursor to modern guided cruise missiles was the V-2 ballistic missile. Nazi Germany launched thousands of V-2s into Great Britain under the mistaken impression that the randomness and brutality of this new technology would break Londoners’ spirit. Instead, V-2 launches only strengthened the Britons’ resolve, like indiscriminate bombing always does, always has, and always will.
Trump Warms To Ukraine Only Because It’s Winning; He Might Do The Right Thing For The Wrong Reason
The war between Russia and Ukraine is the largest European conflict since World War II. It is also the most morally unambiguous war since WWII.
Guest Commentary: The housing crisis doesn’t start with a tent
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... Homelessness is the most visible sign of a housing system under duress. We see it in the family sleeping in a car, in the veteran waiting for a bed in a shelter, and in the tent encampment beneath an overpass. We see it in the seniors who spend the day in public spaces with nowhere else to go. But by the time someone loses the roof over their head, the crisis has usually been building for years, out of sight.
Data Centers In Space: An Absurd Fantasy Dumber Than Running Hundreds Of Tests On A Drop Of Blood
(Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue) I know we all have the attention span of goldfish now, but remember Theranos, the company founded by a 19-year-old college dropout that claimed to be able to conduct hundreds of medical tests on a single drop of blood? Yeah, it couldn’t do that, because it is physically impossible. You simply need more blood than that.
The Next President Should Throw Open The Gates Of Trade To BYD And Other Electric Automakers
Shenzhen, China-based BYD Co. is the largest manufacturer of electric automobiles in the world. Last year, BYD fully electric models outsold Tesla by more than 600,000 units. BYD’s most affordable electric vehicle costs the equivalent of about $8,000. Those who have tried it in China report that it doesn’t feel cheap either. Meanwhile, the least expensive Tesla model will set you back $36,990.
I Don’t Think Trump’s Remaining Supporters Realize How Much They Are Despised By Non-MAGA Voters
Early last week, I was at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library for its first weekend. At the library itself, despite President Donald Trump inserting himself incongruously into the opening ceremonies, I did not see a single person sporting a Trump-branded clothing item. The town of Medora, North Dakota, itself was, however, a different story. It wasn’t overwhelming.
50 Years In, Index Fund Investing Risks Include Meme Stocks, The AI Bubble, And Presidential Market Manipulation
On August 31, 1976, John C. Bogle of Vanguard launched the first index fund available to individual investors. From that point, the benefits of spreading investments across a broad swathe of stocks to both limit risk and maximize gains (at a bare minimum of expense) were available to regular people, not only to large institutional investors.
Halfway To 250, America’s Republican President Fought Big Business, Won The Real Peace Prize, And Loved Nature
Like many of my fellow Americans, I have zero interest in any of the tacky, self-aggrandizing events President Donald Trump has planned for the nation’s 250th birthday. None of that is about us or our real history. Rather, Trump’s semiquincentennial celebrations are all about himself and a sanitized (and, frankly, pretty boring) version of the otherwise rich, complex story of the United States.
‘We’ve Had Some Real Problems With Vandalism,’ Says Washington, D.C.’s Vandal In Chief
(Photo by SAUL LOEB / AFP) (Photo by SAUL LOEB/AFP via Getty Images) Without asking anyone who knew what they were doing, or getting permission from Congress for spending tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer money on it, President Donald Trump decided to award no-bid contracts to some of his cronies to drain and resurface the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial to make it a different shade of blue. A supposedly new algae-suppression system was also installed.
SpaceX Stock Keeps Rising, And I Can’t Think Of A Better Use Of Investors’ Money Than Blowing Up More Launchpads
(Photo by Apu Gomes/Getty Images) SpaceX has done some truly amazing things. The company almost singlehandedly lowered the cost of launching things into low earth orbit by an order of magnitude. But this is Tesla all over again. When everybody said nobody could make a profitable electric car, Tesla proved them wrong.
Formal Law Firm Mentorship Programs Are At Death’s Door
It’s the case at any large law firm or big government legal office, or at least it used to be, that every new associate attorney is paired up with a more experienced senior attorney as part of a formal mentorship program. Mentors are supposed to help their mentees develop their legal skills, conform to firm culture, and, over time, build their own book of business. Formal mentorship programs look good on paper. In reality, though, they are increasingly failing new lawyers.
20 Nonfiction Book Recommendations To Jumpstart Your Summer Reading Season
Every year I commit a column to describing a few nonfiction books that I deem worth reading. It used to be my top 15 I’d read that calendar year, then, as I failed to narrow it down, my top 20. Now I’m simply going to put out a list as soon as I get to 20 heartily worthwhile nonfiction reads.
I was listening to a podcast from the economist Tim Harford (who you should really check out if this is the first time you’re hearing of him) the other day when he said something that particularly piqued my interest. Harford said that he and everyone else his age is about five IQ points lower than they otherwise would be due to the effects of leaded gasoline on brain development in childhood. Harford is 52. I trust his reporting, but I still wanted to look into this a bit more myself.
As The National Debt Soars, Trump Steals Billions From Taxpayers To Redistribute To January 6 Rioters
For nations, debt spending is not necessarily a bad thing. Whether it is wise or foolhardy for a country to borrow money really depends on what it is being spent on. For example, the last time America’s national debt exceeded America’s gross domestic product was during World War II. I would say that it was worth going into debt to defeat the Nazis and to smash imperialist Japan.
At 40, I Just Finished My 10th Marathon, So I Challenge JD Vance, 41, To Get Off The Couch And Run His First
(Photo by Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images) JD Vance and I have a lot in common. We’re both Leos born only a year apart. Each of us came from humble working-class families and went to law school. We share a concern that Donald Trump might be “America’s Hitler.” Of course, there are some important distinctions between us as well. Vance’s book vastly outsold my book.
Billionaire Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Insults The Stupid Working Class For Playing The Lottery
United States Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent is a totally relatable guy. He went to Yale and then made hundreds of millions of dollars running hedge funds. Just another working class stiff trying to get through the week, am I right? While speaking to The Associated Press last week, Bessent decided to lecture us plebeians about how we only have our own stupidity to blame for our financial insecurity.
Can You Get In Any Legal Trouble By Flipping The Bird To Gaudy Trump-Branded Properties?
(Photo by RBL/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images) Last week I happened to be strolling through the Upper West Side when I found myself next to the Trump International Hotel’s Manhattan location. While I had some vague idea of where the ones in my vicinity were, a Trump-branded property was not something I’d consciously realized I’d be encountering before I set out.
The U.S. Is Poised For Its First-Ever Population Decline And All It Took Was Making It A Bad Place To Live
In its entire 250-year history, the United States of America has never suffered even a single year-to-year decline in population. Throughout the centuries, here, births and immigration have always outweighed deaths and emigration. While we slaughtered each other in the Civil War, our population increased. During the Great Depression, our population increased. As we were ravaged by the Revolutionary-era smallpox epidemic, the Spanish flu outbreak, and the COVID-19 pandemic, our population increased.
John Fugelsang’s Separation Of Church And Hate Is Antidote To Blasphemous Trump Posts
(Photo by Mark Wilson/Getty Images) Like John Fugelsang, I was raised strictly Catholic. However, a lot of variation falls under the umbrella of “strictly Catholic,” and the unique backstory of his parents early in his book “Separation of Church and Hate” is worth the purchase price alone. Furgelsang definitely put in his time promoting the book, and I’d heard him speak in the course of a number of media appearances before I finally picked up a copy a little over a week ago.
Very Soon, Thousands Of Individual Banknotes Of U.S. Paper Currency Could Say ‘Donald J. Trump Protects Pedophiles’
I don’t know how closely you look at those few paper bills floating around in your wallet. Cash hasn’t been the most convenient payment option for a long time, and it’s even less favorable these days considering the Donald Trump-induced demise of the penny, which prompted many merchants to round transactions by a few cents for those paying with cash.

A Dispatch From The Flagship No Kings Rally In The Twin Cities
I parked at the Science Museum of Minnesota — about a mile by foot from the state Capitol grounds. I started alone. At the first stoplight, a woman came to my side. We crossed. A few more protesters emerged and clustered around us as we passed side streets. The sky was a deep blue, save for a few wisps of flattened contrails. The cold was biting. More and more people joined our group, like individual water droplets merging into a single moving mass.
Mantle deformation records fossil convergent upwelling at Perm Anomaly
Abstract How low-velocity anomalies in the lower mantle influence convective flow, and their broader role in mantle dynamics, remain a topic of ongoing debate. One such anomaly, located roughly beneath the Russian city of Perm, is exceptionally well sampled by core-traversing seismic phases. We investigate seismic anisotropy, propagation- and polarization direction-dependent seismic wave speeds caused by deformation, within and around the Perm Anomaly at a sharp lateral resolution.

The Nation’s Stupidest Rally Around Trump’s War, Now It’s Up To The Rest Of Us To Shame These Ding-Dongs
(Photo by DON EMMERT/AFP via Getty Images) On March 19, President Donald Trump met with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in a doomed attempt to rope Japan into his unpopular war with Iran. “Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor?” Trump said to Takaichi in response to a question from a reporter about why he did not tell American allies about his unprovoked attack on Iran. The attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor famously occurred on December 7, 1941.
Ukraine Once Again Proves Its Friendship By Trying To Save The U.S. From Its Own Decadence
*Photo by Samuel Corum/Sipa/Bloomberg via Getty Images) When I was reporting from Ukraine this fall, I learned to sleep through the air raid sirens. The local authorities sounded them every time any kind of munition was headed remotely in our direction, even though most often the Russian drones and missiles veered off to targets elsewhere before impact. When Russian forces eventually did massively bomb Lviv, the sound that woke me in the early morning hours was not what I expected.
You, The Average American Taxpayer, Individually Spent $276.29 This Month To Fund The War Against Iran
War isn’t cheap. The biggest costs of war inevitably involve the economically immeasurable toll of the lives lost. The fallen not only represent generations of snuffed out potential themselves. They also leave behind swathes of forever altered survivors doomed to follow the unpredictable dictates of grief over the coming decades.
