Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first paid role on a salary was at Macworld. Prior to that I wrote a 10,000 circulation music magazine I published myself.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes

How is social media changing news?

Better and worse. I actually think it's the algorithms that need to be regulated, not the networks per se.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It should mean you fight for truth, integrity and hold power to account.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

No recollection of that. It's sort of silly. There will be a new one in ten minutes.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

By email. Once. One follow-up.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Fingers, mainly.

What's your favorite social network?

I'm kind of torn. LinkedIn seems to have become more interesting, BlueSky is nice, and X continues to be the magnet that sucks my time.

Who do you wish followed you?

Generous, philanthropic billionaires with a social conscience who want to subscribe to my newsletter

Why did you become a journalist?

I had to.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't wait, build. If you need to write, write. Write about what you love. Start fanzines. Contact websites to offer stories, Get seen. Do.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I'm always on, but tend to handle email in the am

What's your favorite drink?

I've become partial to herb teas since I quit drinking a few years ago.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

somewhere else, duh

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That tech is boring. Doesn't that seem a silly position to take at this point in the century?
