If the verdict survives appeal, English football faces a punishment without precedent, and then a fight for its own credibility. In the years before these financial regulations, Premier League football was like the Wild West. As both a voter in the forthcoming by-election and a broadcaster and writer in this space, I went to the hustings for the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, organised by the London Jewish Forum and the Board of Deputies and introduced by Adrian Cohen. No George Galloway there, but the five leading candidates did show: from the Lib Dems, Conservatives, Labour, Reform UK and the Greens. But only one of them was why the room was so full.

What was your first job as a journalist?

Breakfast Show Sports Presenter at BBC Radio WM in 1987, working with the legendary Tony Butler. 38 years later, I’m doing the same job.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, my first newsrooms only used typewriters, BBC WM and Beacon Radio - and I’m from a family of typewriter mechanics and retailers!

How is social media changing news?

By pushing the news agenda in multiple directions faster than ever. The danger is confirmatory bias as people resort to echo chambers.
