Abstract Neural populations that are able to extract quantitative information from multiple sensory domains are essential for the survival of numerous species. How quantity is encoded across different senses is far from understood. Here, we identified an overarching coding scheme for visual and auditory numerosity using high-field functional magnetic resonance imaging at 7 Tesla in humans.

In the previously published study (Rademaker et al., 2019). two groups of participants completed two VWM experiments where on a given trial they were asked to remember an orientation of a grating, which they had to then recall at the end of the trial. In the first experiment, the delay period was either left blank (no-distractor) or a noise or randomly oriented grating distractor was presented (Figure 1a).

Abstract In the adult brain, hemodynamic responses to visually presented numerosities reveal receptive field-like tuning curves in topographically organized maps across association cortices. It is currently unknown whether such tuned topographic responses to numerosities can also be detected in the developing brain. Here we conducted a 7 Tesla fMRI experiment in which we presented a large set of visual dot displays to 11-12-year-old children and adults.
