A Lewis and Clark County District Court judge has ruled a law requiring voters to put their birth year on absentee ballots violated the state’s constitution, and has ruled in favor of Disability Rights Montana and Big Sky 55+, which challenged the legislation. Ballots for the Nov. 5 general election have already been sent overseas, with voter packets headed to Montanans by the end of the week. Some overseas ballots have been sent and returned.

The Capitol Complex Advisory Council voted 8-1 during a meeting this week to tear down a former residence of Montana governors, located at 2 N. Carson Street in Helena. The building has been a topic of legislative and state discussion for years, as the residence, built in 1959, was in disrepair. It would have needed nearly $4 million to repair when the issue was discussed during the 2025 Legislative session. That number was even higher, potentially more than $5 million.

My first paying job was as a freshman in college working for the Daily Iowan, Iowa's student and community newspaper.

I have, though not in quite some time. I prefer to handwrite letters.

How is social media changing news?

It's making everything easier to consume and changing the way newspapers have to think — not something everyone wants to do.

(Judge's comments) Incredible teamwork to pull all the pieces together for this look back at a disaster of immense proportions. The reflections are vivid. The pain is real even a decade. Importantly, there's a focus on changes made in disaster response, communication and logging. Well done.
