A Devon councillor has launched a Parliamentary petition calling for an immediate moratorium on planning approvals for AI data centres and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) outside designated AI Growth Zones. Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, a Liberal Democrat councillor on both Torridge District Council and Devon County Council, launched the petition earlier this week. She represents Torrington Rural at county level, where she is also Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs and Broadband.

AI Growth Zones yet to accelerate planning activity, FOI data suggests

The UK Government had promised that AI Growth Zones would help accelerate the development of the infrastructure needed to support its AI ambitions, but new planning data suggests that progress remains patchy. According to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request analysed by property data firm Search Acumen, there appears to be limited planning activity across some of the areas designated as AI Growth Zones, despite promises of faster planning decisions and improved access to power.

Scotland introduces new rules for 50 MW data centre projects

The Scottish Government has introduced new rules requiring planning authorities to notify Ministers of proposed data centres with a power capacity exceeding 50 MW within seven days of an application being validated. The new direction doesn’t just apply to new planning applications, but also those already making their way through the planning system.
