What was your first job as a journalist?
Sportswriter at The Altamont Enterprise, a local weekly in Albany, NY.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yeah, probably twice, and it was difficult.
How is social media changing news?
Making it better and worse at the same time. News gets out faster, but with less depth.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Ahhh, what?
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Seeking the truth and reporting it fairly.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
The pitch needs to be complete, a mini-story with room for expansion.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Mind, body, soul, and electronic devices.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter or Instagram.
Who do you wish followed you?
Zola Jesus.
Why did you become a journalist?
To tell stories, and put focus on people and places and things that matter.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, but I did work for my college newspaper...
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A long time ago, I did an extensive report on concussions in high-school athletes, shedding light on a then-new database, ImPACT.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Seek the truth and report fairly, always.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Morning, day, early evening, night, late night...
What's the best pitch you ever got?
A curveball.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
An Editor of the past wanted me to cover an out-of-order bathroom at the local Wal-Mart, and I did, only to get throw out by security.
What's your favorite drink?
Probably water, maybe coffee, but really a juicy IPA.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In the kitchen, walking the streets, or comfortably sitting near my record player while it sends sweet music into the air.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Ringer.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That new music is not as good as the classics, but some new music is really great.
