Child sex trafficking victims rarely receive compensation.

The News' investigation showed that in the Northern District of Texas restitution was ordered in just 6% of child sex trafficking cases, compared with 21% nationwide. The system fails, in large part, because it relies on prosecutors, who represent the government not victims, to seek restitution. Judges often only require restitution when sought by the prosecutor. Victims often are not even aware they are entitled to compensation.

She later disappeared into the state's foster care system after suffering from depression. She attempted suicide. A 13-year-old seventh- grader was forced to have sex with men in Houston by a pimp who hooked her on drugs.

Child pornography crimes have exploded online, but victim compensation lags behind

That would seem stricter than the restitution rules for child sex trafficking, which also mandates compensation to victims but does not include a minimum amount. In reality, the problems that prevent child sex trafficking victims from receiving restitution also persist in child pornography cases.
