1 Introduction Expanding the use of nonwoody fibrous raw materials as pulp for paper production could be crucial for today's paper industry, as there is a growing need to reduce wood consumption for pulp and paper production. Strategic efforts are therefore focused on identifying alternative lignocellulosic feedstocks for this large industrial field. Since the beginning of papermaking, nonwood materials have been used in the early stages of its development.

Lavender stems, a by-product of essential oil extraction, were processed using the nitrate-alkali pulping method.
