This year particularly, prolonged dry periods have put some producers in a tough spot regarding silage harvest. By Delbert G. Voight and Joseph Akins Key points for planting corn and soybeans Depending on the hybrid, optimal final corn plant populations may range from 28,000 to 35,000 plants/acre. It is common to add 20% to the seed drop in order to achieve the desired final population. For example, if a final stand of 30,000 plants/acre is desired, one would drop 36,000 corn seeds/acre.

It’s almost time for planters to enter the field again and begin the process of providing feed and forage for farms across the commonwealth. The planting operation is one of the most critical steps in achieving high crop yield and quality. The purpose of the planter or drill is to open a furrow to place the seed at the same depth so that each seed will emerge evenly and create a tabletop stand in the field.
