As a student of history, I affirm the proper distinction between ecclesiastical authority and civil authority.

We are told that religion belongs in personal devotion, houses of worship, and private morality, but should have no influence on law, culture, or public policy. According to this view, a healthy society requires a neutral public square where religious convictions are excluded. The problem is that neutrality does not exist. Every law reflects a moral vision.
