‘I felt Holden was talking to me alone’: The Catcher in the Rye at 75
In 1981, when I was 17, my first girlfriend gave me a paperback of her dad’s favourite novel. I’d never heard of it despite living in a home full of books. My parents loved the work of Edna O’Brien, Muriel Spark, John le Carré, Dickens. So did I. But encountering the first sentence of JD Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye made the world burst into colour.

‘The Ghosts of Rome’ by Joseph O’Connor
Fiction – paperback; Harvill Secker; 384 pages; 2025. The Ghosts of Rome is the second book in Joseph O’Connor’s Rome Escape Line trilogy — but it works as a standalone. The first book, My Father’s House, was set in September 1943; this one is set in February 1944, six months after Nazi forces occupy Rome and the city comes under the control of Gestapo boss Paul Hauptmann.
A priest and his team foil Nazis in 'The Ghosts of Rome'
A literary sequel worth its salt should satisfy two types of readers: those who read the first installment and those who didn't. Joseph O'Connor's new novel is one such book. The Dublin-born writer has fashioned it so that it functions as both a standalone work and a follow-up to its predecessor. "My Father's House" was about a clandestine group that smuggled Allied soldiers and Jews out of Nazi-occupied Rome.

Joseph O'Connor looks at the Irish connections to Rome
Irish visitors have been coming to Rome for at least a thousand years, and the Irish presence is visible all over the eternal city. Joseph O’Connor lived there while researching his novels My Father’s House and — just published — The Ghosts of Rome. Here, he takes a walk through his top ten Roman places with an Irish connection… Villa Spada, the Irish Embassy to Italy, is perhaps the most beautiful of all Ireland’s embassies.
Escaping the Nazis, With Help From a Priest and a Countess
As with O'Connor's earlier novels, the power of "The Ghosts of Rome" comes from the dazzling variety of voices employed, the sense of a world constructed in multiple dimensions. The contemporaneous narratives are related in an urgent present tense, with breathless sentences, single-line paragraphs. These are augmented with memoirs, transcripts, Gestapo briefings and other found documents.
THE GHOSTS OF ROME
A pulpy throwback that shines a light on abuses even magic can’t erase. Hung out to dry by the elders who betrayed them, a squad of pregnant teens fights back with old magic. Hendrix has a flair for applying inventive hooks to horror, and this book has a good one, chock-full with shades of V.C. Andrews, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Foxfire, to name a few. Our narrator, Neva Craven, is 15 and pregnant, a fate worse than death in the American South circa 1970.

Napoleon: A Life 🎯 A bestselling book on Five Books in 2024 Interest in Napoleon Buonaparte, the Corsican soldier who became emperor of France, is perennial on Five Books, with most buyers gravitating towards Napoleon: A Life by British historian Andrew Roberts. 2023 has seen an even bigger bump than usual. Mutation of a highly conserved isoleucine residue in loop 2 of several 𝛽-coronavirus macrodomains indicates that enhanced ADP-ribose binding is detrimental to infection
Abstract All coronaviruses (CoVs) encode for a conserved macrodomain (Mac1) located in nonstructural protein 3 (nsp3). Mac1 is an ADP-ribosylhydrolase that binds and hydrolyzes mono-ADP-ribose from target proteins. Previous work has shown that Mac1 is important for virus replication and pathogenesis. Within Mac1, there are several regions that are highly conserved across CoVs, including the GIF (glycine-isoleucine-phenylalanine) motif.

‘My Father’s House’ by Joseph O’Connor
Fiction – Kindle edition; Vintage Digital; 276 pages; 2023. Review copy via Netgalley. It’s arguably unfashionable to write about priests doing good things, but that’s exactly what Irish writer Joseph O’Connor has done in his latest novel, My Father’s House. The story is based on a real-life Irish Catholic priest, Hugh O’Flaherty (1898-1963), regarded as one of the unsung heroes of the Second World War.
PARP12 is required to repress the replication of a Mac1 mutant coronavirus in a cell and tissue specific manner
New Results doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2023.06.16.545351 Abstract ADP-ribosyltransferases (ARTs) mediate the transfer of ADP-ribose from NAD+ to protein or nucleic acid substrates. This modification can be removed by several different types of proteins, including macrodomains. Several ARTs, also known as PARPs, are stimulated by interferon, indicating ADP-ribosylation is an important aspect of the innate immune response.
