Despite enforcement order, Cork property is still on short-term lets
Two months after Cork City Council began an enforcement action against a house advertised on Airbnb despite being renovated with €70,000 in grants which stipulated it had to be a long-term let, the property is still rented as a short-term let. The owner of the property company managing the house has insisted he has received no notice of any enforcement action, but the council has reiterated that the action is being taken.
A summer without a home can stunt a child's development, says UCC psychologist
A UCC psychologist has said spending a summer in homelessness can impact children’s developmental milestones. This summer, 255 children in Cork and Kerry are without a home, spending the summer school holidays in emergency accommodation. Children now make up over one-third of all people experiencing homelessness nationally, and the average stay in emergency accommodation for a family is over a year, with many staying far longer.
Man, 48, ‘who spat at garda’ in Cork is kept in custody
A 48-year-old man, who spat on the glass in front of him in court when he was charged with assaulting a garda by spitting on her, has been remanded in custody for a further week, for DPP directions in his case. Owen Wilson, of Cornerstone Day Centre, Denmark Rd, Manchester, in the UK, loudly cleared his throat and spat at the table and glass in front of him on his first appearance at Cork District Court on July 7.

Irish temperatures soar again as UK has hottest day of year at 38.1 degrees
By Emily Beament, Press Association Environment Correspondent Temperatures climbed to 25 degrees in Dublin's Phoenix Park this afternoon as the country undergoes a second day of hot weather. Met Éireann says temperatures could reach 31 degrees in some areas, and it's advising people to be mindful of their pets and livestock. Night-time temperatures will not drop below 15 degrees in most areas.
Cork student (17) dies in suspected electrocution in Greece
Sean Ryan An Irish tourist who lost his life while having a shower in Greece has been named. The 17-year-old Alex McKee, from Cork city collapsed while having a shower on August 9th on the Greek resort of Aegean island of Kimolos. Local police said they believe he died as a result of being electrocuted. Mr McKee was a fifth-year student of Terence MacSwiney Community College in Knocknaheeny on Cork City’s northside. He was due to start his Leaving Cert year in September.
Man (51) accused of facilitating criminal organisation in bank card fraud
Tom Tuite A 51-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being accused of facilitating a criminal organisation in a bank card fraud. William Oshingbeme appeared before Judge Ciaran Liddy at Dublin District Court, the third man to face charges connected to a Garda National Economic Crime Bureau investigation. The accused, originally from Nigeria, has lived in Ireland since 2001 and has an address at Ardmore Court, Fortunestown, Dublin 24.
Becker misses out on a place in 400m final at European Athletics Championships
Sophie Becker missed out on a place in the final of the women's 400 metres at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. She was eighth in her semi-final in a time of 52.47 seconds, over a second outside her personal best. Marcus Lawler and Sean Aigboboh have both qualified for the men's 200-metre semi-finals. They are among a number of Irish athletes racing tonight, including Rhasidat Adeleke, who is in the lineup for the women's 200-metre final at 9:50pm.
