In that time and since the newspaper has served the people of Cork by faithfully, factually and fairly reporting the daily news and standing up for the citizens. It is my privilege to lead the team which carries on that tradition of service. It is an excellent team of professional journalists dedicated to the interests of the men and women of Cork City and County - and trusted by them.
We provide the most extensive coverage in stories and pictures of the good news and the bad news as it affects Cork people, and we argue and advocate Cork's case on every issue. Our sports service is the most comprehensive in Ireland, and suitably reflects Cork's greatest obsession. The St Finbarr's Hospital rehabilitation unit in Cork has been internationally recognised as an age-friendly health system by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). The IHI designated the unit at the hospital as being committed to care excellence, in recognition of the unit's commitment to providing the best possible care for older people.
Families left without childcare after Cork creche closes its doors
More than 20 children in Wilton have been left without childcare places as the creche they were attending closed suddenly last week. A spokesperson for Cork City Childcare Committee told they were “aware of the notification to parents regarding the closure of Naíonra Thigh Wilton. “We are supporting affected parents and families,” they said. The closure is understood to be due to staffing issues, with the creche having posted recent advertisements seeking staff.
Douglas local appointed head of financial services at SYS Financial
SYS Financial, one of Ireland's leading financial advisory firms, has announced the appointment of Douglas resident, Denise Conlon, as head of financial services, bringing more than 36 years of financial services experience to the firm's growing leadership team. She will lead SYS Financial's financial planning team, providing leadership, structure and support as the business continues its expansion. Ms Conlon joins SYS Financial following a career spanning Ireland's financial services sector.
Neptune struggle at home against Limerick Celtics and start the SuperLeague season with two losses
Limerick Celtics recovered in the final quarter to see off a late Energywise Ireland Neptune rally and secure their first win in the Domino’s Men’s Super League at the Neptune stadium on Saturday. Not the greatest game for the purist as the home side only really put eight minutes of solid basketball together over four quarters that eventually came back to haunt them.
O’Driscoll’s late point secures Castlemagner four in a row in the Duhallow JAFC
Castlemagner 1-10 (1-1-8) Ballydesmond 1-9 (1-1-7) CASTLEMAGNER maintained their hold of the Ashgrove Renewables Duhallow JAFC after overcoming a gritty Ballydesmond in a closely fought encounter at Newmarket on Saturday. Crucially, the victors found their composure during the latter stages to complete a four in a row, minor player Barry O’Driscoll stepped up to the plate with a match winning point.
Ballinhassig return to senior camogie ranks after strong showing against Ballygarvan
Ballygarvan were crowned SE Systems Premier Intermediate champions in MTU as they overcame a Ballygarvan side losing in the final for the second year in row at MTU on Saturday. This win sees them return to senior camogie next season. It was very much a case of youth and experience for Hassig, with Eimear O'Sullivan, Ger and Catriona Collins, Deirdre Coomey and Niamh Sheehan blending with the younger brigade led by Millie Lombard and Grace Healy.
Bad weekend for Cork men's SuperLeague sides with three defeats
Ballincollig suffered a rare defeat when going down to a rampant Limerick Eagles side 96-67 in the Domino’s Men’s Super League at the UL Arena on Saturday night. This was basketball at its best for the home side who dominated from the opening quarter despite Ballincollig nailing the opening two baskets. The Eagles soared following a stunning Darragh Horkan three pointer in the second minute and midway through the quarter UL commanded a 13-10 lead.
McMillan laments Munster throwing away "a nice handy lead" in wild draw with Ulster
No-one celebrates a draw. Munster supremo Clayton McMillan felt their eight-try stalemate with Ulster in Belfast on Saturday night was one that got away. Richie Murphy waved away the cliché about mixed emotions. All he felt was bitter disappointment. Munster looked almost home and hosed by the interval. Up 26-5 by then, a try-scoring bonus point already secured on the back of overwhelming dominance in possession and territory and a penalty count that was killing the hosts.
Plans for new bowling, darts, karaoke and restaurant complex in city centre
A new Cork city centre leisure and entertainment complex, contingent on clearance from planners, will include bowling lanes, pool tables, darts, karaoke, and a games arcade, as well as serving food. The number of jobs it will create is estimated at 25-30. In its planning application to Cork City Council, JCD was keen to point out that the proposed development, at Half Moon St, “does not include any form of gambling or betting”.
