Joseph Braude’s Biography
Author and Middle East specialist Joseph Braude studied Near Eastern Languages at Yale and Arabic and Islamic history at Princeton. He is a writer and editor at Majalla, a leading Arabic- and English-language magazine. He serves as advisor to the Al-Mesbar Center for Research and Studies in the UAE, senior fellow in the Middle East program at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, and counselor on Arab affairs at America Abroad Media in Washington.
In the United States, his writing has been published by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The LA Times Sunday Magazine, The American Interest, Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, Glamour, BookForum, The Fix, and Tablet, among other publications. In the Middle East and North Africa, his writings have appeared in Asharq Alawsat(https://english.aawsat.com/author/joseph-braudeasharqalawsat-com), Al-Majalla, Al-Ittihad, Al-Arabiya, and Al-Ahdath al-Maghrebiya.
In his first book, The New Iraq (Basic Books, 2003), Joseph Braude explored prospects for international civic engagement in the war-torn country. For his second book, The Honored Dead (Random House – Spiegel & Grau, 2011), Braude obtained "embed" access to an investigative unit of the Moroccan federal police in Casablanca for half a year. In that capacity, he scoured case files and accompanied detectives in their investigations. The book offers a bird's-eye view of an Arab police force and a window into urban life in a North African metropolis.
In December 2017, Rowman & Littlefield will release Braude's third book, Broadcasting Change: Arabic Media as a Catalyst for Liberalism.
