The opening of Parshat Vayera, when Abraham hosts the three angels, has always resonated with me. The first verse alone highlights two acts of loving-kindness, or gemilut hasadim: visiting the sick and welcoming guests. G-d appeared to him in the groves of Mamre, and he was sitting at the door of the tent in the heat of the day. (Genesis 18:1) The Talmud states that this was the third day after Abraham’s circumcision, and G-d came to check on him.
