A tiny desert island. A few bedraggled castaways — long beards, ragged pants — stand under the lone palm tree. A detective, in trench coat and slouch hat, addresses them: “You’re probably wondering why I’ve gathered you all here today…” The Iron Skull is an anomaly: He should, by all rights, be a villain. He’s a scary cyborg. He has big, lidless, staring eyes. He has no nose. His name is Iron Skull. The Red Skull is a bad guy. Iron Jaw is a bad guy. What are the odds that Iron Skull would be good?

Two friends talking. One says: “I used to worry that the world was going to end. Now I worry that it won’t.” Not an uncommon fear these days. We’re living in a movie that’s taking too long to wrap things up. From a happier time… P.C. 49 was a popular character in mid-century Britain. He was a hardworking bobby who starred in a long running radio series, a few movies, and a comic strip: The radio stories are good. I’m less convinced by the comics, but I haven’t read much of them.
