What was your first job as a journalist?
My first comics journalism project was "Titans of Finance: True Tales of Money & Business," with writer R. Walker.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, I loved my IBM Selectric -- used it all the way through high school.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Hard to choose between Tintin and Clark Kent...
What does it mean to be a journalist?
For me, it means bringing clarity and illumination to issues important to our daily lives.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Phone, email, social media — they all work for me!
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
My iPhone (for photos and recordings), Scrivener, blue pencil, Japanese brush pen, Bristol paper, and PhotoShop.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter; or my weekly softball game

Why did you become a journalist?
I became more interested in stories about other people than I was in myself.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge, my chronicle of seven survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Ask the questions you're interested in knowing, not what you think others want to know.
What's your favorite drink?
Water. And the Sazerac.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
The drawing table!
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The New York Times, the New Yorker, the Cartoon Picayune, and The Comics Journal.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That comics have to be funny!
