Despite the many advances in our understanding of viral infections, influenza A virus (IAV) continues to impose a significant heath burden and presents a serious threat for a worldwide pandemic. Severe IAV infection is characterized by a cytokine storm. Recent evidence indicates mast cell activation is a key initiator of this cytokine storm during severe IAV infection.
