Nationals recall first baseman Andrés Chaparro from minors
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals recalled slugging first baseman Andrés Chaparro from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday. The 26-year-old Chaparro is hitting .274 with 15 homers in 53 minor league games this season. Nationals interim manager Miguel Cairo said Chaparro would play primarily against left-handers, and he was in the lineup Tuesday night against New York Mets lefty David Peterson.
Nationals opening day starter Josiah Gray has an injured pitching elbow
About 2 minutes reading time. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Washington Nationals opening day starter Josiah Gray went on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right elbow and forearm problem, among of a series of pitchers hurt around the majors early this season. Gray, a right-hander who was an NL All-Star last season, is 0-2 with a 14.04 ERA so far in 2024. The IL move was retroactive to Saturday.
A Disturbing Case of Neglect: Midsouth Health & Rehabilitation Center's Downfall
There are key factors associated with nursing homes and institutions, including health, professionalism, safety, and care. These factors contribute to the general wellness and well-being of nursing home residents, and lie at the heart of their caregivers' responsibility. However, when this sense of duty and responsibility fails, the consequences can be tragic. A case in point is the one of James Johnson at Midsouth Health & Rehabilitation Center.
MLB Best Bets and Betting Picks for August 31
Happy Thursday here on the MLB Best Bets as we ride into the very last day of August on the the calendar! That means we have just one month remaining in what has been a wild ride of an MLB regular season but worry not there is still plenty of wagers to be had as we go down the stretch. It's been a good week for me on this article as we've pushed up to 15 wins over .500 on the season record and while its a small slate tonight in the MLB I do have one play I very much like.

The Art of Capturing Wanderlust:
Ah, travel literature! It's the genre that whisks readers away on a magic carpet ride, transporting them to far-flung destinations while they remain firmly planted on the couch. It's a treasure trove that tickles our wanderlust and inspires us to explore the unknown. As a kid, travel stories were the siren song that encouraged me to journey abroad; but, here, the literary enchantment lay in the descriptions which seemed almost mystical.
The Science of Storytelling:
Literary guides and workshops are full of witty one-liners, like: [Be] surprising, yet inevitable Show, don't tell Just do it! That last one was either Nike or Shia LaBeouf and, as a lazy ass writer, it gets me every time. But today, I want to address that first one since it'll help you craft that perfect ending, the type of ending that shocks your audience while also making them wonder how they never saw it coming. And it's easier to write that ending than you might think.
Check your footing
“Careful. One wrong step is all it takes.” That’s a sentence you’re likely to hear if you’re climbing a mountain. Climbing can be treacherous; you never know what might throw off your balance. Maybe the branch you’re grabbed onto has snapped and thrown you backwards, maybe the air has blown a bit too hard and tipped you over. However, you always feel safe when both feet are on the ground. You always feel secure when you know what’s under them and what will happen next.

A Sacrifice of Praise
If you’re a Christian you’ve almost certainly been in a setting where it was time to praise God, and if you’ve been in that situation, you’ve definitely had times where you didn’t want to. Maybe you’re tired, maybe you’re angry, or maybe you just don’t want to look weird. Well I want to encourage you today, friends, we all feel these ways sometimes. I don’t know another Christian alive who hasn’t had one of these thoughts even though we all know intellectually that we shouldn’t.
The Search for Everything
Everyone’s looking for something. Whether it be in the form of love, acceptance, stability, peace, joy, excitement or purpose—they all want something to fill a lacking area in their life. They search for it, they spend decades of their lives “experimenting”, or trying to find whatever suits them; sometimes this might end with a boring, desk job for the rest of your life, or you could find yourself a hopeless addict, destroying their life in search for the next bump.
Shine Bright
“Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticise you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. Hold firmly to the word of life…” Philippians Chapter 2 Verses 14-16 NLT. These are words that Paul, a champion of the faith, wrote to the Church in Philippi, encouraging them with advice on conducting themselves.
“Embrace the pain”
Unsplash / @timwilson7 One of the most predictable things human beings are likely to suffer is pain. If there is objective truth, it’s that The Lord of the Rings is the best film series ever made, and that anyone who has lived has experienced pain of some kind. If it is a case of physical pain, like if your sibling has smacked you with a pillow just a little too hard, you probably want to avoid that.
“A woman can’t lead!”
The Bible seems such a great source of knowledge. It reaches for a scope and scale of things grand and vast and explores the hidden depths of the human psyche. If it weren’t for a few pesky passages, I imagine many more would be reading it. One such set of passages have received endless interpretation and abuse: those concerning a woman’s role in the church and the family.

Deprived of Depravity, or, the Closeness of Pain
We all have a different response when we’re in pain. Some of us shrivel up and hide. Some of us strike back at the world, intending to cause the same hurt that was caused to us. And some of us simply ask why. As if in questioning the universe, it will somehow answer back. It is interesting to note that it is never when life goes well that we ask such questions; “Why is it that I have such a good family, good job, good circle of friends…?” the list goes on and on.

The Laws of Leviticus – A reflection on the most boring book of the Bible
We have all made that same proclamation; “This year, I will read the whole Bible cover to cover!”. And we have all failed miserably at it. For a while, it cooks. We are swept up in that epic story of Creation and read fervently through Babel and the Flood. We pull out as much depth as we can and sometimes, we manage to get to the Abrahamic tales, and even to Moses. But there are few who will brave Leviticus. Dig deep It is quite easy to simply ignore this book.
How to leave a church
There’s no ‘correct’ way to leave a church. No perfect time to move on. Countless young people I have met describe to me a span of time they have spent ‘church-hopping’, and when I ask why this has been the case, they explain to me the ways they’ve been hurt by a certain church they used to be committed to – one that they poured their hearts into and felt they had been burned by in the end.
Grace never subtracts
Grace adds, it never subtracts. Most people, when they read Genesis, are likely to fall into thinking about whether or not the universe was created in seven literal days. One does not have to travel far to find a debate on this very topic, and as a result, I feel a lot of valuable wisdom to be found in the creation account is lost. One of the prevailing and more beautiful ideas of it is that God creates things in a perfect state and that sin is the detraction of said state.
Covered in Grace
I find great value in interaction with myth. To me, a myth (a story which is not factually accurate but concerns archetypal ideas) contains truth which can sometimes be truer than true. It encodes, so to speak, ideas that are on the human psyche and presents them in abstracted and easy-to-grasp ways. When we pay attention to these myths - when we discuss them and consider them – we can usually tease out rich information and ideas that lead to different views on the world.
Observations of a Classroom
“…Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these…” Mark Chapter 10, Verse 14 NIV. If you’ve read my bio, you’ll know I’m studying to be a teacher. These past two weeks, I have been on what we call ‘prac’ (practicum experience). Essentially, I have been at a school and, under the close eye of a mentor, teaching students.
The Death of Media
TV camera records, 1954 | Australian National Library Media is dead. And we have killed it. Some of you may recognise these words as a play on Nietzsche’s famous statement. When he wrote it, he wasn’t in a celebratory mood; Nietzsche believed that scientific thought had robbed people of a morality that had always been evident. Just as Nietzsche declared the death of God, so too will I make a case for the slow and tragic death of media.
Running Towards
Have you ever been chased? And I mean, REALLY chased? Maybe a dog down the street got of its leash, or maybe you broke your sister’s favourite toy (when you were a child) and she decided to break your face? You no doubt have felt it; the fear inside you which makes your legs run faster than you thought humanly possible. Your heart beats at supersonic speeds and suddenly you’re about ten kilometres away. I’m being playful with dramatic language to get at something, fear motives us.
Remain in dialogue
Do you ever feel like you’re trapped in your own head? When I go to sleep at night, I find that if I’m not calm or tired, my brain feels like it’s firing a thousand thoughts at once and it is almost as if it’s too loud for me to go to sleep (even though on the outside, one could likely hear a pin drop). One of the loudest voices in my head is always that one which seeks to constantly criticise (for ill) my own actions and thoughts.
Take control of the life you’re given
One of the things that annoys me most in the whole world is when people spend their lives glued to their phone with no other reason than to scroll (insert social media network here). You probably know the kind of person I’m talking about. Those friends who, when you agree to go somewhere together, hardly ever look up from the phone unless it’s to order their food or to give a short response to whatever conversation point you’ve thrown out there.
Because He lives
Last time I wrote, I talked about how we must make life worth the suffering. That if we didn’t have a strong reason to live for, then we wouldn’t be able to walk through the pains of the human condition. Clearly, a lot can happen in a month or so. Say… A pandemic? And all of the sudden, most of us can’t even leave our house. It’s here that we realise how much of our reason for being was tied up in what we DO. Don’t worry. You’ll certainly get back to whatever it is you do in life.
2020 Dodgers Top 100 Prospects: No. 3, RHP Josiah Gray
Josiah Gray. We;re almost done with the Dodgers Top 100 prospect countdown, and seeing as there won’t be baseball anytime soon, that may or may not be a good thing. Anyhoo, here’s No. 3, Josiah Gray. He’s really, really good.
The key to enduring suffering
(Photo: Unsplash/Jason Hogan) I'm a big fan of Dr Jordan Peterson; many of my musings echo his thoughts and I find him to be a wealthy source of knowledge and wisdom. So, it is of him I will be thinking as I ask the question: why live a life of suffering? A state of the human condition described in Genesis is that of suffering. As Adam and Eve are removed from Eden, God says, I will terribly sharpen your birth pangs, In pain shall you bear children.
Worth the suffering
If you’ve read any of my work, you might have guessed I’m a big fan of Dr. Jordan Peterson; many of my musings echo his thoughts and I find him to be a wealthy source of knowledge and wisdom. So, it is of him I will be thinking as I ask the question; why live a life of suffering? We will suffer A state of the human condition described in Genesis is that of suffering. As Adam and Eve are removed from Eden, God says, “I will terribly sharpen your birth pangs, In pain shall you bear children.
The glory of the tree
It seems to me the biggest thing anyone is looking for is purpose. People will strive and while away their lives just searching for some kind of reason to make the inescapable suffering of life worth it. I was part of a group a few weeks ago where we acted out ‘sharing our testimonies’ and ‘witnessing’ to each other. The common thing I heard from people about ‘their lives before’ was that they felt like they had no reason to live; that they were trying to fill a hole in their hearts. Don’t worry.
New Year, Same Mission
It’s always at this time of the year that we start to make new commitments. We tell ourselves that THIS TIME we’ll stick to it. That gym membership is going to last this time, this year is the year I finally learn the guitar, and I’m going to read so many more books. How often it is, though, that these commitments never last. Maybe a week, maybe a month, but inevitably some part of our original promise to do something different is lost simply because we weren’t as committed as we thought we were.
The nature of Good and Evil
Last week I wrote on the nature of Wisdom (as far as I could see it) and I liked a lot of the ideas I figured out. I thought, then, that I would look at the ideas of ‘Good’ and ‘Evil’ this week and see what else I could come up with. Of course, I won’t be doing this alone; I will invoke the help of Milton, Tolkien and Dante to assist me as I discuss the ideas of the good/evil dichotomy.
The nature of wisdom
I used to think I had a pretty good grasp on the Bible. The past few years, however, as I’ve opened myself up to more and more ideas, I’ve come to realise just how close-minded about it I once was. I can’t recall exactly what it was that started it all, but for some reason a phrase kept circling around my head; “Surely you’re not arrogant enough to think you have it totally worked out?”.
Made to love
“… already my desire and my will were being turned like a wheel, all at one speed, by the love which moves the sun and other stars.” – Dante Alighieri (Paradiso) I’ve just finished reading The Divine Comedy, and I feel as though the entire structure of my belief has changed during the process.
MLB Injury Report: August 9
The dog days of August are upon us as fantasy GMs enter the stretch run vying for playoff berths and league championships. This edition of the Injury Report contains several big names which could sway the balance of many leagues. By now GMs should hopefully have accumulated depth and flexibility in order to withstand the loss of key players at this critical juncture of the season.
Winning people, not arguments
(Photo: Unsplash/Headway) I can be argumentative. Seriously. I am often more inclined to fight for a point to be understood than I am to encourage my friends. Not because I like being right – at least I hope not – I simply hate the thought of people being wrong or misinformed. It genuinely irritates me when someone isn't everything I know they can be and they aren't trying to reach their full potential. I believe we can be better.
Dodgers trade Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Alex Wood to Reds in a salary dump
Dustin Nosler 12/21/2018 Alex Wood, Jeter Downs, Josiah Gray, Kyle Farmer, Matt Kemp, Trades, Yasiel Puig Today is a sad day. Today is an exciting day. Today is, well, crazy. The Dodgers have traded Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood, Kyle Farmer and $7 million to the Reds in exchange for right-hander Homer Bailey, infield prospect Jeter Downs and right-handed pitching prospect Josiah Gray.
How do we hear the voice of God?
I have a question for you; how does one hear the voice of God? If you think back to Moses you might say He simply speaks audibly and we listen. If you think back to Isaiah you might say it is through dreams. Even if you think of John and his mighty Revelation you wouldn't be wrong in saying God speaks through visions.
2018 MLB Week That Was: Week 11
Randal Grichuk : Grichuk was on fire Sunday going 3-5 with two runs and a RBI. Yes, he strikes out too often. Yes, he has been back and forth to the minors. However, this is a guy who is now just 26 and has hit 46 HR is just over 850 AB over the last two years. Wait, I know what you are thinking – this guy is hitting .181 AFTER that big day Sunday. True. However, in his last seven games, he is 10-26 with seven runs and nine RBI. Not too shabby.
2017 Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Report: December 21
Each week of the National Hockey League regular season, we will take a look at some of the most interesting names that may appear on the waiver wire in various fantasy leagues. It may be NHL players whose situation has improved because of injury, minor-league players recently recalled (or on the verge of a recall) or off to fast starts in the AHL. Here is this week's batch: 1.
