Meet the new sides in the Southern League Premier Division Central
We have had two sides drop down from the sixth tier, both from the National League North, one move across from the Northern Premier League, and four come up from step 4. Up first we meet the two relegated sides. Leamington FC Leamington join us from the National League North, and are looking to bounce back quickly after a disappointing campaign last season. Nicknamed “The Brakes” after the club was founded by workers from the local automotive braking system company “Lockheed Borg & Beck”.

RIP Bob Tullius 1930-2026
By Bob Tullius, a man synonymous with racing Jaguars Stateside, died on Monday, 16 March, at the age of 96. Born in Rochester, New York, he passed away in Port Orange, Florida, not far from the Daytona International Speedway, the track at which he claimed his final race victory as a driver, in the 1986 three-hour race, sharing a XJR-7 with Chip Robinson.
RIP Eddie Jordan 1948-2025
By The charismatic Eddie Jordan died at the age of 76 on 20 March, in Cape Town, South Africa, having fought aggressive prostate cancer for the past year, his family said. “With his inexhaustible energy he always knew how to make people smile, remaining genuine and brilliant at all times. Eddie has been a protagonist of an era of F1 and he will be deeply missed,” said Formula One President and CEO Stefano Domenicali in tribute.
Dream drives: A591, Cumbria
By For anyone who visits the Lake District, the A591 is an unavoidable pleasure to drive. Winding for 30 miles from Kendal to Keswick, it follows the shore of Lake Windermere for stretches and offers beautiful views at every turn. It being the main thoroughfare means that it is a tourist trap, but the most clogged sections through Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside are tempered by vistas of boats, fells and mountains.
BOAC 500: Britain’s answer to Indy and Daytona
The fixture certainly made a name for itself in the years that followed, if not one that endured – in more ways than one – quite like those Guthrie had mentioned. It also returned ‘500’ to the name of a British race for the first time since WW2 – the Tourist Trophy had been around 500 miles long, but more by luck than design. In fact, motorsport has had a mild affliction with the number 500 for more than a century.
Audi 200 Avant quattro vs Volvo 850 T-5R: race-bred estates
By There are faster estate cars than the Audi 200 Avant quattro Turbo. There are bigger ones, too; more powerful and more spacious; more famous and more notorious. There aren’t many that are rarer, though. A handful at most remain from what was a limited run of 171 UK cars. An estate that ticks most, if not all, of those boxes, and even runs the rarity race close, is the Volvo 850 T-5R.
Birds of Fannin County: Eastern bluebird
Editor's note: With the Jack Phillips Memorial Bluebird Festival coming up Saturday in Ravenna, we thought this would be a good time to run an article about eastern bluebirds that Mr. Phillips wrote in 2009. Ravenna, Texas -- Being raised in Fannin County and living half of my life here, I was always fascinated by the many different birds we are privileged to share our lives with.

This mini air purifier quickly improved air quality and combatted mould in my home
DH Lifelabs Aaira Mini air purifier review The Aaira Mini is the latest small room air purifier by DH Lifelabs with the power of HOCl. HOCl stands for hypochlorous acid, a naturally occurring molecule that is a weak form of acid that can break down microorganisms on impact. This molecule acts as a disinfectant and has been used in numerous industrial sectors around the world – now DH Lifelabs is deploying this for domestic use.
Tom Kristensen: the making of Mr Le Mans
When the sister car to Wollek’s 911 GT1 also retired hours later, to the front went a young charger named Tom Kristensen, who had encountered his own many doses of bad luck chasing a Formula One seat. Just six weeks before Le Mans he had accepted a drive in a Tom Walkinshaw Racing-created, Porsche-and-Jaguar mongrel WSC-95, and so began the legend of the greatest sports-car racer yet. Nought for 27 went Wollek; one for one went the youthful Dane.

Every Actress Who's Played Diane Jenkins On The Young And The Restless
Alex Donnelley made her debut in "The Young and the Restless" as Diane in 1982. At the time, the character sought to excel in her modeling career by dating businessman Jack Abbott (Terry Lester) and blackmailing him in the hopes of becoming the cosmetic brand Jabot's top model. This relationship continued even after Jack became engaged to Patty Williams (Lilibet Stern), which triggered an eventful ménage à trois.

The fastest Lotus Carlton ever? Meet this wild racer
By For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here American organisers sure know how to name a race, from the Subway Jalapeño 250 powered by Coca-Cola and Buschy McBusch Race 400 to the TreatMyClot.com 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series. In comparison, the Silver State Classic Challenge and its sister event the Nevada Open Road Challenge are fairly tame. Yet in many ways they are the most evocative, and quickly send your mind into overdrive.
Citroën B12 taxi: my fare landaulet
For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here Lily James (as Linda Radlett) desperately betrays her Englishness in the BBC’s acclaimed adaptation of The Pursuit of Love. Because, of course: “French ladies never, never sit crying on their suitcases at the Gare du Nord in the very early morning.” She was supposed to have been coerced into a suitably Parisian carriage to “luncheon” by the suave Fabrice de Sauveterre.
Elise at 25: farewell to a Lotus legend
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here Before you even pop open the small, short doors, you know exactly how a Lotus Elise is going to drive. You know, for example, that the steering will be faultless. And you know it will feel more like a kart than a car. You know, too, that it will corner in a way that will make you never want to see a straight piece of road again.
Future classic: Aston Martin DBX
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here No pressure, but on these high-rise shoulders rests the very future of one of the most historic British brands. And that should be read with only a hint of hyperbole. This much-lauded DBX is already playing catch-up, because even Lamborghini has beaten Gaydon/St Athan to market (and is reaping the rewards on the bottom line) and only Ferrari is yet to come.
Classic shrine: Great British Car Journey
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here New car museums don’t pop up often. But Great British Car Journey in the Derwent Valley is so new you could easily drive right past the small industrial estate on which it resides, just off the A6 Matlock Road. It’s so fresh there aren’t even any signs up yet. “The gate was being installed just yesterday,” explains founder Richard Usher.
En vogue off road: Jeep CJ-7 vs Toyota FJ40
Rarer still on these shores is the Jeep CJ-7. If you want one on your drive you’re going to be waiting a while for the classifieds to come up with the goods. And best of luck finding one remotely close to stock. The upshot of tracking down either a CJ or FJ, if you get lucky, is an unexpected magnet for enthusiasts’ eyes and envy. It should go without saying that the Jeep is the more famous of the two.
Brooklands to celebrate British GP’s birthday
By Jack Phillips | 3 Aug 2021 For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here The first British Grand Prix, held at Brooklands in 1926, will be celebrated at the Surrey museum on 7 August with a special event on the famous banking and Finishing Straight. A Delage 15-S-8 from that very race will be in attendance at Brooklands Relived, along with later cars such as a 1928 Aston Martin LM1 and 2013 Mercedes W04.
Mazda MX-5: a class apart
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here It wasn’t supposed to be like this. The original Mazda MX-5, the NA, is the best of the four generations. Everyone knows that. Better as a 1.6-litre than a 1.8, because the balance is perfect and it outweighs the increase in power. The Mk2, the NB, is the ugly duckling (bear with me, owners). A bit heavier but a bit faster, and not better; and no pop-up lights.
RIP Jean-Pierre Jaussaud 1937-2021
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here Double Le Mans winner Jean-Pierre Jaussaud has died at the age of 84. The Frenchman enjoyed a hugely successful career, not least in front of his home crowds. Both his Le Mans wins came aboard French machinery, first in 1978 alongside compatriot Didier Pironi with Alpine and again in 1980 with local privateer Jean Rondeau.
Also in my garage: FBHVC’s David Whale
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here It comes as little surprise that David Whale, president of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, has an interest in pedal-powered transport. After all, it is the bedrock of the automotive industry.

By Jack Phillips | 6 Jul 2021 For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here The Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens (FIVA) has urged governments to preserve their historic vehicles, as countries roll out low-emission zones. It believes more consistency is needed across Europe, labelling it a ‘patchwork of local rules causing increased consumer confusion’.
Future classic: Mini JCW GP
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here It used to be such that if you wanted a fast and furious Mini, then there’d be no point flicking through the dealer catalogue. Better to buy basic, maybe a Cooper if you’re splashing out, then roll down the garage door and get to work removing this and adding that.
RIP Max Mosley 1940-2021
For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here Former racing driver and FIA president Max Mosley died today (24 May) at the age of 81. A close ally of Bernie Ecclestone, he served three terms as president from 1993 to 2009 and oversaw huge change in Formula One, not least in safety improvements. The son of former British Union of Fascists leader Sir Oswald Mosley, his custodianship was not without controversy on and off track.
RIP Bobby Unser 1924-2021
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here American racing legend Bobby Unser died at the age of 87, on 2 May 2021, at home in New Mexico. Future classic: Bentley Continental
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here The Bentley Continental GT Convertible means very different things to different generations. For some it’s a commanding, stately cruise liner, for others it’s one of the fastest cars in the world, and for others still it means Premier League car parks – for better or worse.

Signing off in style: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI vs Evolution X
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here Around the turn of the new millennium, it always felt as if preferring the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo to the Subaru Impreza was not the done thing. It was unpatriotic, almost, despite both cars being Japanese, mainly because of the deep-blue Scooby of Colin McRae duking it out with the Ralliart Evos. It was the dramatic McRae against the enigmatic Tommi Mäkinen.
History repeating? Remembering Ferrari at Le Mans
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here The relationship between Ferrari and Le Mans is a paradox. By 1965, no marque had mastered the Circuit de La Sarthe better than the already nine-time winners. Not even Bentley. No manufacturer had more consecutive wins, either. Not even Alfa Romeo.
Goodwood moves 78th Members’ Meeting
For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here Goodwood’s sell-out annual season-starter, the Members’ Meeting, will now round out the 2021 season following a date change to 16-17 October, after the announcement of the UK government’s road map out of lockdown. The event had been shifted to 15-16 May, rather than its customary March/April slot, but had missed the earliest date outdoor restrictions can be lifted by just a day.
Also in my garage: classic transport memorabilia
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here Vintage Ford man Terry Smith lives an enviable lifestyle, with no mobile phone, no computer and therefore no email address or social media. That’s not to say he lives off grid or in the periphery; quite the opposite: he’s spent the past four decades happily and delicately making a name for himself on the side of cars, hot rods, dragsters, vans and more as a signwriter.

Future classic: Audi RS4 Avant
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here Just as football didn’t start in 1992 with Sky and the Premiership, the fast estate didn’t begin with the Audi RS2 of 1994. It can feel like it, though, and there’s no mistaking its game-changing, seismic impact. It was, after all, the fastest of its type when it was launched. Ever.

Top 30 biggest sellers of 2020
The auction market adapted quickly to the new normal in 2020, and there has been barely any let up at the very top of the market for the very best cars. These, then, are the highest-priced cars that found new homes this year, some in traditional sales, some online-only. It’s quite a thought, a collector sitting at home clicking their bids up into the millions. Remarkably, or perhaps naturally, Ferrari and Bugatti combine for half the list – five of the top six come from Molsheim, in fact.

Seven decades of separation: the Morgan Plus 4 at 70
By Jack Phillips For the latest classic car news, features, buyer’s guides and classifieds, sign up to the C&SC newsletter here Tradition holds great value for a company such as Morgan. It does for other marques, too, of course, but at Malvern it’s different. Consider the weight the Porsche 911 has put on in its five decades and the acreage of road it now demands. Then look at what’s happened to the Morgan +4 in 20 more years. The answer is not a lot, really.
