Research: The Complicated Role of Hope in the Workplace
Emotions are a part of everyday life — both at work and outside of it. In the work context, emotions are particularly likely to emerge when organizations are working on ambitious or challenging projects. For example, large numbers of employees might experience shared joy if they take time to celebrate their successes in achieving project milestones.
Employee Demographics Don’t Have to Be at Odds with Employees’ Identities
MirageC/Getty Images Over the past decade, more people have begun to openly acknowledge that their identities don’t fit in with existing conceptions of gender, race, and ethnicity. The way we see ourselves has evolved to better reflect the nuances and complexities of being human. “He” and “she” are no longer the only acceptable pronouns. It is becoming more widely understood that racial and ethnic identities can change across time and place.
Happy People Value Time over Money
The research is unambiguous: People who value time more than money are happier and more productive. But actually shifting to a time-first mindset is really hard. Partly, it’s because of how our brains are wired. Partly, it’s because we don’t know how to measure what time is worth. A $10,000 raise is easy to understand; calculating the value of an extra 30 minutes isn’t so simple. But it’s getting easier.
What You Gain by Being Vulnerable at Work
One morning in Bangalore, South India, Archana Patchirajan, founder of a technology startup, called her entire staff in for a meeting. When they were all seated, she announced that she had to let them go because the startup had run out of funds. She could no longer pay them. Shockingly, her staff of high-caliber engineers who had their pick of jobs in the booming Silicon Valley of India, refused to go. They said they would rather work for 50% of their pay than leave her.
How to Move from Self-Awareness to Self-Improvement
We know that leaders need self-awareness to be effective. That is, an understanding of their strengths, weaknesses, feelings, thoughts, and values — as well as how they affect the people around them. But that’s only half of the story. Self-awareness is useless without an equally important skill: self-management. Self-management is a conscious choice to resist a preference or habit, and instead, demonstrate a more productive behavior. A client of mine, we’ll call him Rick, serves as a case in point.
Coping with the Effects of Emotionally Difficult Work
Police must serve warrants and make arrests to uphold the law. Therapists must purposefully expose patients to their greatest fears (e.g., spiders, heights) to treat anxiety disorders. Bill collectors must demand money from debtors so that companies are remunerated. And doctors must tell patients to put their affairs in order because they have a terminal illness.
Alyssa Milano Tries To Use A Bible Verse To Defend Abortion. Twitter Let Her Have It.
Wow, you know someone does not understand the Bible when she tries to use a verse to defend abortion. You can also tell that she, actress Alyssa Milano, feels guilty. Why need to defend your belief in and love for God if you have a clear conscience? Milano has recently made waves by urging fellow celebrities to boycott Georgia over passing the heartbeat bill, which bans abortion after a heartbeat is detected, usually around 6 weeks.
The Right and Wrong Ways to Help Pregnant Workers
According to a 2015 report by the Pew Research Center, working while pregnant is becoming increasingly common. In the late 1960s, about 40% of women worked full-time during their first pregnancies; by 2008 that figure rose to almost 60%. The report also found that eight in ten women (82%) worked until they were within one month of their due date. Women now represent close to half of all workers. They are a key part of any organization’s talented workforce.
