Miami leaders will decide whether to sell Olympia Theater in upcoming meeting

One of Miami’s most treasured cultural landmarks might soon be up for sale. The City of Miami is considering selling the historic Olympia theater to Sports Leadership and Management, or SLAM, a charter school founded by Grammy-winning international performer Pitbull. City Manager Art Noriega said repairs on the nearly century-old building would cost $40 million, a sum the city is not willing to put down.

Key West City Commissioners — under pressure from Florida’s attorney general — are reentering into an immigration enforcement agreement between local police and federal officials. Last month, the Key West city commission voted to make its 287(g) agreement between local police and federal officials void. The agreements deputize and train local law enforcement as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and gives them the authority to carry out federal immigration laws.

Miami’s first Cuban-born Mayor speaks out against ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

Miami’s first Cuban-born Mayor is joining the ranks of pro-immigrant and environmental groups speaking out against ‘Alligator Alcatraz.’ Longtime South Florida politician and attorney Xavier Suarez told WLRN he opposes the new detention center for two reasons. “I’ve always been pro-immigration. I’m an immigrant myself, how could I not be. It saddens me to see people treated as some of the rhetoric that they use,” Suarez said.
