Meet Me in the Middle
Hello and happy Friday, friends! Today I want to share with you a fantastic piece my friend Allison Kirkland wrote about her memoir-in-progress. Slower changes in vegetation phenology than precipitation seasonality in the dry tropics
1 INTRODUCTION Terrestrial ecosystems act as a land carbon sink that offsets about a quarter of anthropogenic CO2 emissions (Friedlingstein et al., 2022), and play an important role in slowing down the recent global warming (Shevliakova et al., 2013). While better pay and benefits always help, the untapped resource that employers often fail to utilise when combatting toxic behaviour is their own staff. Here’s why strong employee connections can safeguard your business from ‘quiet quitters’, and my top tips for how to effectively create an environment that supports workplace bonding.
How does it end??
There is a common thread of thinking that when writing a first draft of a novel, you should write through to the end. Plenty of craft books and writing teachers will advise you not to double back, which can be very risky—we go back to clean up Just One Thing, which turns into two things or three things or twenty things. An unfinished first draft is basically a giant junk drawer, but in an unfinished kitchen.
Modern makeover of a Spanish-style home in bayside Melbourne
Sometimes, life has a way of coming full circle, with the past weaving a path back to the present. "When I had my own family, we settled in another part of Melbourne and lived in a Victorian house for 20 years.
Reconnect, recharge and reenergize in the great outdoors
Technology runs our lives – this we can’t deny. On any given day, most people struggle to take a breather and rest their eyes from the screen for longer than a few minutes. As employees most of us can’t function without laptops and technology, and as individuals, we can’t live without our smartphones. Screen time has become so commonplace that escaping it seems almost impossible – even though we know it can have negative repercussions for our health and wellbeing.

Shout It From the Rooftops
In early February, I made a bold declaration about my novel: “I’m hoping to finish a draft of Act One before I head out for a retreat in mid-April.” When I said it, I did not believe it would happen. Not one cell in my body believed that in two months I would coherently formulate an entire third of a novel. Metrics make me anxious. When the measuring tape comes out, my first panicked thought is, I am definitely going to come up short.

Tour Kate Walker's glamorous, palm-fringed home on the Mornington Peninsula
Being able to envision and conjure a bold new identity for a 40-year-old property requires imagination and daring. Forget Paris (For Now)
Local Landscape Offers Hopeful Reassurance During a Milestone Celebration Long before I learned the word coronavirus, I had a plan for my 40th birthday last March: I’d be in Paris. Learning to Live Outdoors
Reflections from the Longest Year Since March, aside from speedy grocery runs and a few medical appointments, I’ve hardly been indoors. When I’m inside, the announcement that played in airports after 9/11 rings in my head: The threat level is…orange. When I step outside, I feel relief, filling my lungs with the sweet, safe breath of the natural world.
