ALONE, TOGETHER

Office party, dinner party. Garden party. So many reasons to celebrate and gather and so much work - here is Nicola Toulson-Clarke making Pavlova for a function I hosted at my house last week. Last night I hosted a dinner and today a lunch: work and life mingle best over food, connection, ideas. We know this. I can imagine someone has a good gig catering for @substack’s own “summer fete” to which I was generously invited this evening in London. But I just could not go.

MORAL MAZE

24 May 2026 I’m not exactly making Hay while the sun shines but a good grief distraction is preparation for a live recording shortly of the BBC Moral Maze on the topic of networks. Here is me last week prepping. Eagle eyed viewers will note. I'm scrolling on my phone. The attention crisis of what I called “Social Health” was in the book which was arguably a catalyst for my invitation: networks are back in the news.

Déjà Vu

I can't forget the irregular clack-clack sound of my father’s light green Olivetti typewriter punching the quiet in our Hampstead home in the 1970s. This now obsolete working tool is one of the most important technologies to remember, because it connects the human using it so directly to their “output”: words on a page. Ideas are, as a Leader in the Economist once wrote “more powerful than blood or money”.
