Gretchen's table: These gluten-free meatballs feature beef, spinach and feta cheese
A versatile dish that spans many cultures and can be made with beef, pork, chicken or even plant-based ingredients, meatballs are great as a standalone dish on top of rice or noodles, tucked into a pita or stuffed into a roll as a sub. (Julia Sudnitskaya/Dreamstime/TNS) Young or old, it's the rare diner who is not in the mood for meatballs.

Another Competitive Overseers’ Election Takes Shape
With the announcement today of the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) nominating committee’s candidates for the Board of Overseers, a second consecutive, competitive campaign for election to the governing board appears to be shaping up. Harvard Forward (HF) last year succeeded in qualifying five candidates for the ballot by securing signatures on nominating petitions, and three were elected.
Harvard Cautions on Spring Classes
As the coronavirus pandemic threatens public health and overwhelms hospitals around the country, University leaders sent a “sobering” note to the community today, noting that although “some of our Schools have announced that they intend to welcome back increased numbers of students to campus for spring semester” (notably the College, as many as 3,100 of about 6,600 undergraduates—up from about half that many in the fall term), such plans “depend on the status of the pandemic and may need to...

Thirty-two Students Removed from Harvard Housing during Fall Semester
The Harvard Community Council announced today that during the fall semester, 219 students were reported for violating community-health protocols. Among those students, 32 were removed from on-campus housing. The council, a non-disciplinary body of College students, staff, and faculty members, received reports of 251 potential violations, with some students cited for multiple issues.

Data on the faculty’s composition, embedded within Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) dean Claudine Gay’s annual report, are largely consistent with prior-year trends. The ladder faculty (tenured and tenure-track) numbers 728, up from 724; that is down from a 2017 peak (739), but the total has generally been between been 720 and 730 since 2008, when the Great Recession took hold.
“Lives in Limbo”-Roberto Gonzales tallies the human and social costs
The penultimate chapter of sociologist Roberto Gonzales’s book Lives in Limbo—the chapter he calls the most painful and gripping to read, the one that would be its climax, if the book were a work of fiction—opens with a story about two factory workers on an auto-parts assembly line. The men are friends, both in their late twenties, and both undocumented immigrants. Like everyone else in Gonzales’s book, they’ve spent most of their lives in the United States.
Music theorist Alexander Rehding profiled by Jacob Sweet
In the summer of 1977, NASA rocketed two spacecraft out of Earth’s orbit. Their mission: explore the unexplored. NASA had already been to the moon; with Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, its Jet Propulsion Laboratory wanted to push beyond the outer planets and the Sun’s gravitational pull, and into interstellar space. By 2030, drained of electricity, both ships will lose contact with Earth. But that may not be the last time they’re heard. Affixed to each Voyager is a golden record. The Golden Record.
