Mammal ectoparasites are a fundamental, although often underappreciated, component of global biodiversity. They influence host population dynamics, community structure, and evolutionary processes, and play key roles in human and other animal health as vectors of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. For example, ticks, fleas, lice, and mites—the principal groups of mammal ectoparasites—have complex life cycles and intimate ecological relationships with their hosts.
