What was your first job as a journalist?
I wrote for a local independent newspaper in my hometown, The Santa Clarita Valley Proclaimer.
How is social media changing news?
Citizen-journalism is rising and filling in the gaps of legacy media outlets.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To tell the truth, to hold those in power accountable, and to tell the stories of those traditionally left out in media.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram or Perfectly Imperfect
Why did you become a journalist?
I loved writing and research and was good at it, but I also love reading about nuanced perspectives on common themes in the mainstream.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Write whenever you can, read the local paper, follow journalists on social media
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Local journalism is dead. My first gig in journalism was writing for a local independent paper in my hometown.
