Julia Serano’s Biography

Julia Serano is an Oakland, California-based writer, performer, biologist, and activist. She is best known for her books Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity, and Excluded: Making Feminist and Queer Movements More Inclusive, both of which regularly appear on best feminist and LGBTQIA+ books lists. Julia’s other writings have been published in over twenty anthologies, in media outlets such as The New York Times, The Guardian, TIME, Salon, The Daily Beast, AlterNet, Out, The Advocate, Bitch, and Ms., and are routinely used as teaching materials in colleges across North America.
