A box stuffed with two hundred and fifty box turtles, prized for their multicoloured shells, awaits their future in the port of Miami after seizure of an illegal shipment. These seizures are often destined for Asian markets, where the animals are valued for medicinal purposes, as cultural tokens, and as pets. Conservative black-market estimates of $1,000 to $2,000 per turtle in these markets make the trade lucrative.

Dancing colors over Lake Superior — the northern lights reward those who brave Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula after dark. | Photo: Tom Oliver Snow, stars, and dancing lights — one woman’s night sky adventure on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. “Don’t fall into Lake Superior.” That’s what I kept telling myself as I teetered on rented snowshoes in the dark. Eagle Harbor Lighthouse loomed nearby, begging to be photographed.

Tulip Mania in Full Bloom: 7 Million Tulips at Keukenhof

Keukenhof: 200 acres of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths in spring bloom. A kaleidoscope of colors had everyone on the bus grabbing their cameras. Our tour group had finally made it to the Netherlands’ famous tulip fields. Crimson and apricot swaths stretched to the horizon. Tulip Mania: The world’s first economic bubble Tulip mania actually began in the late 1500s, after tulips arrived in the Netherlands from the Ottoman Empire.
