America’s Workers Deserve a Four Day Week Published July 13, 2026 The U.S. workweek has remained unchanged for 85 years, despite a 4-fold increase in labor productivity. As a result, American workers are on the job many more hours than workers in other wealthy countries and have among the highest stress levels in the world. However, a growing body of evidence shows that many organizations can thrive with a 4-day, 32-hour weekly schedule.

2026年、週休3日制導入への勢いが再び増す見込みだ。ニューヨーク州では25年春、これに関するふたつの法案が提出された。さらにメイン州の共和党議員も「メイン州の人々は日々懸命に働いている。生きるためだけでなく、もっと豊かに暮らせるようにすべきだ」との理由から、週休3日制の試験導入に関する法案を提出している。 ポーランド政府は週休3日制の試験導入を発表し、スペイン政府も週の労働時間を40時間から37.5時間へ短縮することを承認した。東京都は25年度から職員が週休3日を選択できる制度を導入している。米国では、バーニー・サンダース上院議員とマーク・タカノ下院議員が、公正労働基準法（FLSA）を改正し、標準的な労働時間を週32時間に短縮する法案を再提出する予定だ。 この流れを後押ししているひとつの要因が、週休3日制に関する研究だ。非営利団体「4 Day Week Global」は22年、給与を減らさずに週4日勤務（週32時間労働）を導入したい企業向けの試験プログラムを開始した。以来、世界中で約400社、約12,000人の被雇用者が、この取り組みや関連する実験に参加している。...
