A study on the mixed dielectric model of red clay
Abstract When ground-penetrating radar (GPR) detects red clay, the electric field induces polarization, causing corresponding characteristics in the dielectric constant and affecting GPR’s inversion of soil moisture content. This paper investigates the physical properties of Guiyang red clay, including its composition and liquid-plastic limits. Based on the electric double-layer structure on clay particle surfaces, bound water is classified into strongly and weakly bound water.

Laser speckle particle sizer (SPARSE) informs the size distribution of tissue granularities
Abstract Tissues and biomaterials are composed of particles, including cells, nuclei, organelles, protein aggregates, lipid vesicles, and fibers. The size distribution of tissue particles and granularities is altered in various pathologies. These granularities span a wide range from nano- to micrometer scale, posing a unique challenge in quantifying the continuum of particles sizes in intact tissue.
Cascaded amplification of air lasing
Abstract Air lasing initiated by femtosecond laser filamentation holds exciting prospects for remote sensing. However, low output energies restrict its practical applications. We demonstrate a cascaded amplification strategy that breaks this critical barrier. By implementing quadruple-pass focusing of 5.7-millijoule, 800-nanometer femtosecond pulses in nitrogen, we achieve a 40-fold enhancement in the energy of N2+ lasing, yielding an output of approximately 4.4 microjoules.
Engineered basement membrane mimetic hydrogels to study mammary epithelial morphogenesis and invasion
Abstract Reconstituted basement membrane products, like Matrigel, suffer from variability and xenogenic contaminants, hindering three-dimensional cell culture models. To overcome these challenges, we developed engineered basement membranes (eBMs) using peptide-conjugated alginate hydrogels with independently tunable mechanics. Ile-Lys-Val-Ala-Val (IKVAV)–modified eBMs, with fast stress relaxation and low stiffness, supported normal mammary acinus formation.
A sensory and motor neuropathy caused by a genetic variant of NAMPT
Abstract Nicotinamide phosphoribosyl transferase (NAMPT) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the salvage pathway for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) biosynthesis in mammalian cells and is essential for survival. Here, we report on a previously unidentified axonal sensory and motor neuropathy likely caused by a homozygous genetic variant of missense mutation (c.472G>C, p.P158A) in the NAMPT gene.
Repeated oral exposure to H5N1 influenza virus in pasteurized milk does not cause adverse responses to subsequent influenza infection
Abstract In March 2024, a highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 (HPAI) clade 2.3.4.4b virus was identified in US dairy cows, with spillover to cats, poultry, and humans. Up to 30% of commercial pasteurized milk tested contained viral genome copies. The impact of residual viral remnants on host immunity is unknown. Orally ingested proteins can stimulate gut-associated lymphoid tissues, potentially inducing tolerance and altering responses to later infection.
Scalable deep learning reconstruction for accelerated multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of proteins
Abstract High-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy can assist in determining protein structure, but it requires time-consuming acquisition. Deep learning enables ultrafast reconstruction but is limited to spectra of up to three dimensions and cannot provide faithful reconstruction under unseen acceleration factors. Extending deep learning to handle higher-dimensional spectra and varying acceleration factors is desirable.
Lysosomal LRRC8 complex impacts lysosomal pH, morphology, and systemic glucose metabolism
Abstract The lysosome integrates anabolic signaling and nutrient sensing to regulate intracellular growth pathways. The leucine-rich repeat–containing 8 (LRRC8) channel complex forms a lysosomal anion channel and regulates PI3K-AKT-mTOR signaling, skeletal muscle differentiation, growth, and systemic glucose metabolism. Here, we define the endogenous LRRC8 subunits localized to a subset of lysosomes in differentiated myotubes.
Addressing transconductance-bandwidth trade-off by three-dimensional electrolyte-surrounded organic electrochemical transistors
Abstract The performance of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) is fundamentally constrained by a trade-off between transconductance and temporal response. While increasing channel thickness enhances its capacitance and thereby amplifies transconductance, it simultaneously impedes ion transport kinetics, leading to slower switching speeds.
AggreBots: Configuring CiliaBots through guided, modular tissue aggregation
Abstract Ciliated biobots (CiliaBots) are engineered tissues capable of self-actuated propulsion via exterior motile cilia. While correlations have been observed between CiliaBot motility and morphology, direct control of morphological features to deliver desired motility outcomes remains unexplored.
Age-related remodeling of the sialoglycans dampens murine CD8+ T cell function
Abstract Glycans regulate cellular function, yet how aging affects the glycocalyx remains unclear. Here, we investigate changes in immune cell glycocalyx with age and find that α2,6-linked sialic acid, a glycan epitope associated with inhibitory signaling, is down-regulated in T cells from old animals. This reduction is tightly correlated with age-associated accumulation of effector T cells, which have little to no α2,6-linked sialic acid.
Pervasive sex-dependent effects in the genetic architecture of starvation resistance in Drosophila melanogaster
Abstract Genetic variants can have sex-specific, sex-biased, or sexually antagonistic fitness effects, yet their roles in fitness-related traits remain unclear. Using pooled phenotype sorting and sequencing of male Drosophila melanogaster from natural populations, we identified starvation resistance–associated variants, many in regulatory regions or altering protein sequences.
Development of SARS-CoV-2 as a viral vector: A novel intranasal bivalent vaccine for SARS-CoV-2 and RSV
Abstract Negative-sense RNA viruses have been widely used as viral vectors for vaccine delivery. However, little is known about coronaviruses as vectors for delivering vaccines. Here, we have developed safe SARS-CoV-2 Omicron JN.1–based live attenuated vaccine candidates by combining a mutation (D130A) in the viral nsp16 protein, deletion of the furin cleavage site (dFCS) in the spike protein, deletion of accessory proteins, and/or modification of the transcription regulatory sequences (mTRS).
Ultrabroadband plug-and-play photonic tensor core packaging with sub-dB loss
Abstract Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) enable high-bandwidth neuromorphic processors and low-decoherence quantum computing on chip-scale platforms, but robust, scalable optical packaging remains a major challenge. Efficient fiber-to-chip coupling is critical to minimize loss and maintain high optical bandwidth for photonic computing.

A new chromosome-level genome assembly for western painted turtle Chrysemys picta belli, a model for extreme physiological adaptations
Abstract The western painted turtle, Chrysemys picta bellii, has the greatest tolerance to anoxia of any tetrapod studied to date. These turtles reside in the northern United States and southern Canada, and survive months of anoxia while submerged in ice-locked ponds and bogs. Reference genomes provide an important resource for elucidating the molecular bases for such unique physiological traits.

Cortactin regulates metastatic dormancy of circulating tumor cells by suppressing mTOR-dependent senescence
Abstract Metastatic dormancy often refers to the stable cell cycle arrest of disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) at distant sites. However, whether circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in the blood microenvironment can enter a dormant state prior to extravasation and becoming DTCs remains unclear.
A 3D Genome Atlas of Genetic Variants and Their Pathological Effects in Cancer
1 Introduction To systematically elucidate the complex circuit of connections that exist between regulatory elements and genes, it is necessary to consider that interphase chromatin is folded in 3D in a cell-type-specific manner.[1, 2] In recent years, chromosome conformation capture (3C) assays, in combination with next-generation sequencing, have provided new insights into the global organization of the genome.

Subsurface State Bilayer in Tetragonal Ferroelectric BaTiO3
1 Introduction In the ferroelectric field effect transistor, the detail is absent for the interface between the ferroelectric layer and gate electrode.[1-3] For example, BaTiO3 is integrated with the Pt/Au metal.[3] However, an imperfect interface may trigger the interface chemical reaction, the electric doping, and other possible effects. As a result, the depolarization field appears and depresses the spontaneous polarization.

Trait-dependent biogeography offers insights on the dispersal of Meiogyne (Annonaceae) across the Australasia-Pacific region
Abstract Meiogyne is a genus of trees and treelets occurring in Indomalaya and Australasia-Pacific, an unusually wide distribution across Australasia and Western Pacific compared to the rest of the family Annonaceae. Previous chloroplast phylogenies of the genus offered poor resolution and support for many internal nodes. Here, a molecular phylogeny was reconstructed based on seven chloroplast and 11 nuclear markers of 33 Meiogyne taxa (ca. 70% sampling).
Fungus-infected Meiogyne flowers offer a brood site for beetle pollinators in a tripartite nursery pollination system
Abstract Fungi are widely known for their pathological impact on flowers, but some play a beneficial role in pollination. We report a case of tripartite pollination system in the flowering plant Meiogyne hainanensis (Annonaceae) in Hainan, China. The flowers emit a fruity scent composed of a mixture of mostly sesquiterpenes and aliphatic esters, attracting the primary beetle pollinators Paraphloeostiba sp. (Staphylinidae) and Mimemodes sp. (Monotomidae).
