The most disheartening thing I saw this week was the all-too-plausible hypothesis that the administration figured out its tariff formula by asking an LLM. The “Liberation Day” announcement had mainstream media pundits scratching their heads. Why would we slap tariffs on an island inhabited solely by penguins or a military base on the Indian Ocean? Also, the so-called reciprocal tariffs were not reciprocal at all -- what we were proposing to charge didn’t match what others were charging us.

Fifteen years ago, at a TEDx event in San Francisco, I came across a guy called Damon Horowitz. He was an AI computer scientist, a philosopher, and an entrepreneur, and had brought those three talents together to create a company called Aardvark. Horowitz realised that there were lots of questions traditional search couldn’t answer, and, in those pre-LLM days, that AI couldn’t answer either.
