Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I was an editor of my high school newspaper, the HawkEye at Urbana Highschool. I did the music, arts and news sections.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! I loved the sound the keys made.
How is social media changing news?
It changes it for both better and for worse. The need for immediacy can come at a cost of factual information.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Fictional? Doesn't that go against the point of journalism?
What does it mean to be a journalist?
A journalist is more than just a reporter. A journalist is a detective, an anthropologist, a documenter, a photographer, and a listener.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#CanAnyoneConfirm from when Ryan Reilly of HuffPost didn't know the difference between earplugs and rubber bullets during the Ferguson riots
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Photoshop CC, Microsoft Word, Merlin, Bridge
What's your favorite social network?
LinkedIn followed by Facebook and Instagram.
Who do you wish followed you?
Everyone with a great story to tell.
Why did you become a journalist?
I wanted to tell the stories of people who could not tell them on their own in a way that helps everyone relate to each other.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Constantly write and photograph. Always document the world around you.
When's the best time to pitch you?
I'm usually the one doing the pitching. I'm not editor status quite yet there.
