1 Introduction Animals use colour vision for critical tasks such as feeding, mating, predator avoidance, and navigation (Cronin et al. 2014). To perform these tasks efficiently in highly variable light environments, such as those on tropical coral reefs, fishes have evolved visual systems to perceive shorter wavelengths of light (ultraviolet UV, ~350 nm) up to longer wavelengths (red, ~600 nm) (reviewed by Cortesi et al. 2020).

Damsels in a hidden colour: development of ultraviolet sensitivity and colour patterns in damselfishes (Pomacentridae)

Abstract Damselfishes (Pomacentridae) are widespread and highly abundant on tropical coral reefs. They exhibit diverse body colouration within and between the ~250 species and across ontogenetic stages. In addition to human visible colours (i.e., 400-700 nm), most adult damselfishes reflect ultraviolet (UV, 300-400 nm) colour patches.
