Leger is a Louisiana Department of Corrections inmate and his alleged crime spree began after walking off his work release job with Uncle Sam's Moving Company. "His employer failed to supervise him, violated his contract with us. His contract stipulates that he must be supervised at all times," said Marlin Peachy, one of the owners of North Shore Workforce, LLC, the private company that runs the Covington work release program.

"We were just minding our own business and it happened," said the female victim, who didn't want to be identified because she fears for her safety. She was with 27-year-old Donnie Mehrtens III Saturday morning when three men jumped them.

Wednesday, Aug. 28 - Video provided to Eyewitness News appears to show the first officer on the scene of the beating was out of his car for 5--6 minutes.

"To be honest with you, I use it more to see who's ringing the doorbell than anything else," Blanque said. She put surveillance cameras on her Mid-City home to both deter crime and to capture it. "I think crime cameras in areas that are hot spots, that have a lot of criminal activity, it's a way of taking the neighbor out of the activity," Blanque said.
