“Bongu,” I called out in Maltese to my temporary new neighbor passing by our Airbnb apartment door in Malta. To my surprise, she brushed past me with a scowl on her face. “Wow,” I said to my husband, as I walked inside. “The people in Malta don’t seem very friendly.” But it turns out, her response was not necessarily directed at me. It was to the constant rotation of short-term guests disrupting her family’s home.

The tiny, breathtaking island nation of Malta is one of the European Union’s most overlooked destinations for retirement—or even just a holiday. Malta (pop. approx. 560,000) is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean, between Sicily and the North African coast. Sitting at 36 degrees latitude, these islands offer some of the mildest winters in Europe (think: no snow) and a rich, layered history shaped by centuries of invasions.

Yes! I took a typing class in high school with an old-school typewriter.

No, I worked on our yearbook as a staff photographer.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I wrote a story about my gorilla tracking experience in Uganda. I love travel - add a unique adventure and the story sings!
