Christian Scientists love the Bible. We feel the same love and adoration for Jesus as other Christians do. A recent commentary in the Chronicle (Prosperty gospel may be United States’ new civil religion) left a number of misimpressions about both our values and our understanding of Jesus’ teaching. Christian Science is not a form of the Prosperity Gospel. It does not teach that “God dispenses material wealth and health based on what we ‘decree’”.

Annual Bridge Bash slated for Saturday The Bridge of Lubbock will be hosting its eighth annual Bridge Bash, a large clothing giveaway, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Quality Inn by Choice Hotels will be donating hundreds of pillows. Donations for the Bridge Bash will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Individual drop-off appointments may be scheduled by calling The Bridge of Lubbock at (806) 687-0772.

Vigils planned on execution dates On Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 23 and Thursday, Aug. 24, public ecumenical prayer vigils will be held during the time the state of Texas is scheduled to execute two death row inmates. The vigils will be from 5:45 to 6:15 p.m. at the corner of University Avenue and 15th Street in front of St. John’s UMC across from Texas Tech. The public is welcome. The vigils are sponsored by Lubbock People of Faith Against the Death Penalty.
