A photo was published online showing the legendary actor Denzel Washington sitting next to his childhood librarian. In December, Connie Mauro turned 99-years-old and has spent nearly half of her life working at the Mount Vernon Public Library in New York. Throughout her career, she must have handed over thousands of library cards to the children. However, the librarian had always remembered award-winning actor Denzel Washington who was ‘the cutest thing’ according to her.
Letter: Milton students should be learning long division, not racial division

Gianforte will bring change to wildlife bureaucracy
For 16 years Helena Democrats have controlled our state with many state agencies having little if any accountability. Recent examples of overreach by Fish Wildlife and Parks has made it increasingly clear that these bureaucrats don’t work for us, and hardly have our best interest at heart. Governor appointees on the wildlife commission have proposed an end to shoulder season driving a wedge between landowners, sportsman and FWP.

Falsehoods Thrown at Montana Water Rights Protection Act
Opinion | Letter I am supportive of the MWRPA By Kerry White // Feb 1, 2020 I recently read an article written by State Sen. Al Olszewski on Sen. Steve Daines’ Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes water legislation – an article that was filled with inaccuracies. As someone who has been involved in this debate for years, I felt compelled to respond to the politically motivated, blatant falsehoods being thrown at Daines and the Montana Water Rights Protection Act (MWRPA).
Kids on the Coast - PARENTING: Positive phrases to calm difficult behaviour
27 January 2020 2 minutes It’s all too easy to snap and yell at the kids when they’ve pushed you to your limit. But, we all know how ineffective that can be – responding with angry statements can exacerbate an already high-pressure situation, leading to tears and tantrums all around. Removing yourself from the situation and counting to ten before responding is all well and good, but it can also help to arm yourself with a few phrases to use when your child’s behaviour is becoming difficult.
Daines' water bill is right thing for Montana
I recently read an article written by State Sen. Al Olszewski on Sen. Daines’ CSKT water legislation – an article that was filled with inaccuracies. As someone who has been involved in this debate for years, I felt compelled to respond to the politically-motivated, blatant falsehoods being thrown at Sen. Daines and the Montana Water Rights Protection Act (MWRPA). Let me begin with Al’s favorite claim – that the MWRPA would take water rights away from 350,000 Western Montanans.

Washington, Oregon share Montana obligations
Under President Trump we have seen a sudden resurgence of federalism on the left in American politics as liberal states like California seek to go their own way on issues like the Paris Climate Accord and sanctuary cities. But sometimes these states’ attempt to set policy within their own borders has a very real negative impact on neighboring states.

Kids on the Coast - EDUCATION: What should my preppie really know before school?
Is your child starting Prep this year? If so, it's natural to be curious about what they should be able to do, or concerned that their peers seem more advanced than them. “Mum! I’m bored!” There’s a phrase that’s probably conjured up many a face palm from parents over the long summer school holidays. Without it, kids can get caught up in a blur of instant gratification in the form of iPads, the TV and Playstations. But, what happens when we remove those distractions?

Kids on the Coast - BABIES: Should you have a birth plan?
My eldest had other ideas, resulting in an emergency caesarean at 35 weeks. As you can never really plan exactly how the birth of your child is going to play out, are birth plans a little unnecessary? It might seem that way, but they can still be a good tool for conveying your plans to the healthcare professionals that will be involved in your baby’s birth.
Kids on the Coast - EDUCATION: Do schools kill creativity?
Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson believes children are educated to become great workers, instead of creative thinkers. His TED Talk on the subject has been shared widely around the world. Are schools killing creativity? Sir Robinson believes so. He says we are in danger of squandering our children’s creativity “pretty ruthlessly”. Kids at school will usually take a chance when working something out.
Protecting Mining in Montana
As a legislator that has spent his tenure in the legislature working on natural resource policies, I have grave concerns with the anti-mining ballot initiative that Trout Unlimited is trying to qualify for November. Our permitting processes have been radically changed in the past 20 years. We have reformed our bonding requirements, re-written our reclamation statutes and have adopted the strongest tailings design standards in the world.

A group of expectant mothers were given one of three stories to read to their newborn twice a day for the final six weeks of their pregnancy. The stories included The King, The Mice, and the Cheese, the first half of The Cat in the Hat and the last half of The Cat in the Hat, with some words changed and called instead The Dog in the Fog. Kids on the Coast - WELLBEING: How to live more mindfully
Letting our busy lives dictate us doesn’t just affect our health and wellbeing, but can impact that of our children, too. Kids easily pick up on the stresses that are affecting us, but being more mindful can help us improve our relationships with them. Professor Lea Waters, University of Melbourne’s director of Positive Psychology, explains. “It's about being present and giving each task your full attention,” she says.
Kids on the Coast - PARTY: Best ever cake fails
Still, practice makes perfect (and having a giggle at other people’s baking disasters helps, too!). We’ve trawled Pinterest for the best of the worst. But at least Clingwrap doubles perfectly as an elegant bow, hey?
Kids on the Coast - YOU: Self-care for mothers
We’re not talking playdough with the kids. Take some time out to get creative just for you. A study in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that people who engaged in creative activities had a greater sense of wellbeing and positive affect. The creative pursuits the participants engaged in included creative writing, knitting, cooking, crochet, painting, sketching, graphic and digital design, music and songwriting.
Kids on the Coast - GALLERY: Best party theme ideas
Being aware of the environment is important and an eco-birthday can be educational as well as exciting, colourful and memorable. Use fresh produce for the party food and recycled or reusable plates, cups and cutlery to convey an important message.
Kids on the Coast - EDUCATION: Multisensory ways to encourage early reading
Useful for more than holding up your shopping list, fridge magnets can be a fun way to make words together. Ask your child to use the magnets to spell words from their homework list. Get your child to write the word in the air. This is a common technique used by teachers and can help students to remember the word more easily. Encourage them to really picture the word in their head as they write it. Using touch is another way to reinforce letter memory.

When BVSD included $9.8 million for the remodeling of University Hill Elementary School, the overall project goal was to make repairs and upgrades to the school's buildings to provide a learning environment equivalent to other elementary facilities throughout the district. An evaluation of the UniHill project that was to use the bond money revealed a significant shortage in funds. A sale of the building to CU was proposed with funds used to build a K-8 facility on the New Vista campus.
Bedford responds: Circle's contract is still far from perfect
The aim of innovation and reform in the NHS should be to make the service to patients better and the system more efficient. If that doesn’t happen, all the high flown rhetoric about choice and competition means nothing. So what have we learned and what does the wider NHS need to learn from our experiences of commission outcome based incentives (COBIC)? A new system and new pathways are likely to have teething problems.

Edgar Renews Call for School Finance Reform
In his eighth and final State of the State Address last week, Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar outlined his administration's past victories and vowed to stay focused on children and economic growth during his last year in office. The Republican governor, who has spent the past several years fighting to change the state's property-tax-reliant school finance formula, once again used the address to call attention to what he sees as the "unfinished business" of finance reform.

Noosa 5 May 2015. Australia’s universally-travelled jazz troubadour Bob Barnard is in no doubt about his favourite jazz event – Noosa Jazz Party. He is preparing to attend the event for the umpteenth time (he cannot recall exactly how many) again this year from 3-6 September – though this year jazz fans are being offered more swing with a ‘prelude’ on the weekend before, 28-29 August.
