America’s share of global manufacturing output has fallen from 25% in 1997 to 15% today. Absent intervention, it could reach 11% by 2030. Those numbers get thrown around a lot. What is said less is what they mean for Americans: The United States is losing its ability to produce the things it needs to defend itself, to power its economy and to care for its people. SEN KEVIN CRAMER: China builds for war while America waits on permits
A single major Chinese shipyard can exceed the total output of the entire U.S. commercial shipbuilding industry For too long, the debate over permitting reform has been confined to the wonky world of Washington insiders — endless discussions about transmission lines, pipelines, lawsuits, and administrative procedures. Policymakers fixate on the bark while missing the trees, let alone the forest. The stakes are far higher than connecting a natural gas plant, wind farm or data center to the grid.
Viewpoint: The Highway Trust Fund drives our economy
Whether North Dakotans are delivering crops to the local elevator or loading the family into a minivan for a road trip, well-maintained roads are essential. At the center of it all is the National Highway System (NHS), the network which moves people and freight across the nation. Highways are the heartbeat of interstate commerce, a constitutional duty of the federal government. More goods are transported by truck than by rail, air, water and pipelines combined.

Opinion | How to Keep Electricity Flowing
Permitting has finally risen to the top of the agenda in Washington. After hearing Republicans advocate reform for years, Democrats have realized that offshore wind turbines, solar farms and lithium mines are stuck in the same maze as every other federal project. Thankfully, members of Congress are proposing solutions. A major sticking point last time reform was attempted was transmission, or how electricity is delivered across the country. But it doesn’t need to be a polarizing topic.

Merry Christmas
I love Christmas. I love everything about it. I love being around my children and my grandchildren, especially when they’re opening their presents. I love putting up the tree and hanging the decorations and the lights on the house—both inside and outside. Even blowing snow invigorates me. And of course, there’s the food. Oh, how I love the food. I have so many memories of growing up in North Dakota. In fact, sometimes I still look at my dad’s old 8 mm home movies from the 1960s and 1970s.
