High rents are caused by not producing homes where locations have value. Land rents are a transfer, not earnings. They shouldn’t be included in your price inflation analysis any more than muggings or gifts should be. I saw this interesting, short Minneapolis Fed post, and figured I owed inflation an update. Figure 1 compares core CPI inflation to core PCE inflation. CPI has run hot because housing is a larger component of the CPI.

We have a housing shortage that can be described as being in crisis because our willingness and capacity to build new homes has been so far below an adequate quantity that millions of families must pay a perpetually rising portion of their incomes for housing in order to simply stay put.

As with yesterday’s post, this is another point which I have made before, but I think maybe I have some fresh visuals that can help settle the case. Right-wing pundits are still making the assertion that homes are just more expensive than they used to be because they are larger than they used to be. It’s depressing that this is such a cherished assertion on the right, because the solutions to the problem of housing affordability generally involve deregulating supply.
