Fatal three-vehicle crash shuts down M-28 in Covington Township

BARAGA COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – On the afternoon of June 7, 2026, a three-vehicle crash on M-28 near Pirkola Road in Covington Township resulted in one fatality, significant damage, and the temporary closure of the major roadway. The Baraga County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident at about 2:30 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies found that a semi-tractor and trailer had overturned across M-28 and was fully engulfed in flames after colliding with and breaking a power line.

Police pursuit ends in crash at Negaunee gas station following Marquette shooting investigation

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A police pursuit connected to a shooting investigation in Marquette ended Tuesday evening when a fleeing suspect crashed into a fuel pump. According to Michigan State Police, the man matched the description of a suspect in a shooting. He was later spotted by troopers, who attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect attempted to flee. The pursuit came to an end when the suspect’s vehicle struck a gas station pump at the Krist gas station causing a fire.

Marquette Area Public Schools secures bond to improve facilities and safety

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Voters have approved a bond proposal for Marquette Area Public Schools in the May 5 election. The $59.995 million bond will fund significant improvements in safety, infrastructure, and learning environments across all district schools, addressing critical needs identified through years of planning and community input. Results from the election show that the bond passed with 53.8 percent of voters in favor and 46.2 percent opposed.
