Highlights Frontal brain systems associated with effective regulation of negative emotion overlap with those dysregulated in pathological anxiety. Novel neurobiological perspectives in understanding anxiety in humans and non-human primates are emerging from the application of evolutionarily grounded models of threat imminence in rodents. Functional organisation of threat reactivity along dimensions of uncertainty and imminency in the frontal lobes of humans is mirrored in non-human primates.
