Kevin Z. Smith serves as Deputy Director of the Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. As the functional administrator for the program, he is responsible for developing and carrying out a wide array of professional training opportunities for journalists worldwide.

Winter storm affects local grocery shelves

The first winter storm hit the Pageland and Chesterfield County area on Friday, Jan. 10. Although there was a slight accumulation of sleet and ice from freezing rain and very low temperatures, the inclement weather did not live up to the hype (even if it did have the benefit of reminding everyone to be safe and warm just in case). That didn’t stop the age old tradition of the south cleaning out local grocery stores of two things: bread and milk.

What was your first job as a journalist?

Sports editor of small 5-day-week paper. Also had to be chief photo and wire editor, which wasn't part of the original plan.

How is social media changing news?

For the better and worse. I'm constantly dealing with fallout from lack of media ethics, mostly centering on social media.
