Syracuse, N.Y. — Overall private sector employment in the Syracuse metro area was down slightly in April when compared with a year earlier, according to state data. The area’s private sector job count in April was 258,200, down 0.42% from April 2025. That’s a difference of about 1,100 jobs. The overall job sectors with the most growth in Syracuse in April included leisure and hospitality, state government and state government educational services.

President Donald Trump’s approval rating on the economy reached its lowest point on record in a new poll from PBS News, NPR and Marist. A third of Americans approved of Trump’s handling of the economy in the poll while two-thirds disapproved. His approval rating on the issue is now at its lowest since Marist began asking the question in 2019, according to PBS. Trump’s economic approval rating is also lower than what former President Joe Biden saw at any point during his term.

A total of 11 New York school districts saw 100% of their students test proficient on English language arts Regents exams during the 2024-2025 school year, according to state data. Another 66 districts had proficiency levels of at least 95% and a total of 184 districts statewide had proficiency of 90% or more. The Skaneateles Central School District had the highest proficiency level among school districts in Onondaga County last year at 94%.
