The Lower 8th

8th Ave. extends north from Hudson St. at Abingdon Square to Central Park (where it becomes Central Park West, and north of 110th St., Frederick Douglass Blvd.). It has an odd little stretch between the square and 14th St. in which it cuts across the street grid, creating interesting plazas and building angles. I’m not sure when 8th Ave. was extended south of Greenwich Ave. to Hudson St. at Bethune, but it shows up like that on maps as far back as the 1840s. The south end of 8th Ave.

Hills of Jamaica

Jamaica Hills is one of the smallest neighborhoods I’ve profiled for Forgotten New York. It spans a few square miles between Grand Central Parkway on the north, Hillside Ave. on the south, Parsons Blvd. on the west, and Homelawn St. on the east. It sits atop the terminal moraine that stretches across Brooklyn and Queens, a group of steep hills that mark the southern advance of glaciers that retreated during the last Ice Age.

FLUSHING’S FORMER HORSE TRACK

I was recently poking around on the 1924 aerial photos on NYC Office of Technology and Innovation’s “Now and Then” Application, in the area near Flushing Memorial Fields Park and found something odd. Aerial photography from 1924 shows what appears to be a racetrack north of Bayside Avenue at about where Murray Lane is today.
