I was so invested in Egypt against Australia in Dallas that I didn’t realise it kicked off at 7pm. Thought it was 8pm. Radio listening anyway, and second half, extra time and penalties gave me enough time to clear a relative jungle of weeds around the sweetcorn at my allotment (vegetable plot for my non-UK readers). I also spotted a hedgehog on departing after the penalty shoot-out had concluded.

Just the one game at a time I was going to be awake yesterday, the 8pm kick off between Spain and Austria at the SoFi in Los Angeles. I listen to the first half on the radio and have my evening meal in front of the TV for the second. Once more a reminder. This blog is about my experience of the World Cup as much as the World Cup. When I actually travel to these things, it’s the same really, but of course I’m on the ground.

World Cup Diary 2026 Day 21: England muddle through after shambolic start, Senegal blow it and USA triumph with 10 men

5pm in England, High noon in Atlanta. It’s 35 degrees in Georgia, but fortunately a lot cooler inside the stadium. DR Congo have a handful of fans – estimated to be less than 100 - but who knows which side the locals will back? I guess it depends on whether they appreciate defensive football, because that’s the prediction on how the African side will approach this game. Saka is on the bench and Djed Spence is covering at right back after injuries suffered by Reece James and Quansah.
