From paper mills to the role of artificial intelligence (AI) to the positives and negatives of open access business models and many more, some days the only thing that seems constant is change. But there is one aspect that, in our view, is unchanging, and that is the benefit of insightful and rigorous, yet respectful, peer review to elevate the quality and impact of the work that fills our pages.

To the future, and beyond

I have been around scholarly publishing, beyond serving as an author, reader and reviewer, for a long time. Quite early in my career I had the honour of being selected as editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Physiology – Cell Physiology while still an associate professor. It is almost impossible for me to believe that the journal was not available online when I became the editor.

What's ‘special’ about our special issues?

Unless you have disavowed all electronic forms of communication, you almost certainly receive regular emails from journals soliciting manuscript submissions, often in the context of an invitation to submit to, or ‘edit’, a special issue. Sometimes, these messages are obviously the product of a flawed algorithm, asking for you to oversee a special issue in a field of physiology far from your expertise, and sometimes in another discipline entirely.
